Skybound Entertainment has teamed up with Genvid Entertainment to develop The Walking Dead: Last Mile, a massively interactive live event, or MILE, scheduled to launch exclusively for Facebook Gaming in the coming months. Since the advent of AMC's The Walking Dead over a decade ago, video games based on the Robert Kirkman-created universe have regulary hit the market. Telltale Games' celebrated The Walking Dead series remains the high mark for most, with duds like Overkill's The Walking Dead serving as the lowest of lows.

The world of TWD allows the brand to exist across multiple genres in gaming. Thus, while Telltale's endeavor explored episodic, narrative-driven adventures, Overkill's attempt involved a high-action cooperative experience. On the other end of the spectrum sits titles such as Saints & Sinners, a virtual reality survival horror FPS that's quite unlike anything else in The Walking Dead universe. And who can forget the brand's wide variety of mobile games, which includes everything from a survival RPG in No Man's Land to the location-based augmented reality title known as Our World?

Today, March 1, Skybound Entertainment and Genvid Entertainment have jointly announced The Walking Dead: Last Mile for Facebook Gaming and Facebook Watch. The massively interactive live event will arrive on an unspecified date this summer as a "part game, part television show" designed to immerse participants by placing Last Mile's new story and characters in their hands. Audience members around the world will stream the experience while "collectively and individually" impacting every facet of the all-new saga, Robert Kirkman teased in a statement. Notably, developer Pipeworks Studios has joined the project as well. Details presently remain scarce, but more information should arrive sometime soon.

Few fans of The Walking Dead could've anticipated the announcement of an exclusive Facebook Gaming and Facebook Watch title. But the brand has shown a willingness to take chances on new, pioneering experiences over the years. It's possible this could prove a winning investment in the long run, though that much won't be clear until The Walking Dead: Last Mile releases later this year.

In recent years, Walking Dead characters have crossed over to other gaming franchises, proving that the likes of Daryl, Maggie, and Rick don't need an interactive adventure of their own to take on the undead. Maggie and Negan joined the Brawlhalla roster in September 2021, for instance. Meanwhile, Epic Games threw Rick Grimes into the mix in a Fortnite Halloween event, finally allowing the character to team up with fellow Walking Dead heroes Daryl and Michonne - both of whom hit the Island in December 2020.
