Jayne Atkinson is teasing her role as The Walking Dead's mysterious new character, Georgie, who debuted in Sunday night's episode. Georgie is a member of an unknown community who offered Maggie (Lauren Cohan) "the key to the future".

While Rick (Andrew Lincoln) battled it out with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Maggie and Michonne (Danai Gurira) met an old woman named Georgie who wanted to trade food and vinyl records for knowledge. Maggie was reluctant at first, but was convinced by Michonne to make the deal. Georgie ended up giving them even more than they bargained for, but promised she would return at some point in the future.

In an interview with Comic Book, Atkinson talks about joining The Walking Dead and offers vague clues about her character's background. Atkinson, known mostly for her role as U.S. Secretary of State Catherine Durant on Netflix's House of Cards, normally steers away from acting in films and TV shows that involve a lot of violence. She says she doesn't like to watch someone get their head "clubbed off, shot off, or axed off". According to Atkinson, this is a trait she shares with her character. Apparently, Georgie has been able to avoid participating in much of the violence that has gone on since the zombie apocalypse:

The Walking Dead Georgie

Wherever she's from and however things happened, she has not been touched physically in the way that everyone else has. So I wouldn't say psychologically she hasn't, but, however, she has come out of this more than just surviving.

Georgie wouldn't be the first survivor on The Walking Dead to have lived a sheltered life prior to meeting Rick's group. When Rick and the others first came to Alexandria, they discovered that their leader, Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh) and the other Alexandrians were very naive when it came to survival. Many of the people living in the community had been inside the walls for so long that they didn't know what it was like on the outside. It's possible that Georgie is a member of a similar community.

As Georgie has no connections to the war with Negan and the Saviors, it could be that the purpose of including the character in the episode was to set up the storyline for season 9. Georgie provided Maggie with a book on "medieval human achievement" which will help them survive without electricity. With the book, they'll be able to build structures like windmills and watermills. In the comics, the communities that survived the "All Out War" began to resemble the world that Georgie described.
