New images from the upcoming The Walking Dead spinoff Dead City reveal Maggie and Negan's return. The Walking Dead first premiered on AMC in 2010 and ran for 11 seasons, with the series finale debuting on November 20. While the long-running, critically-acclaimed horror series has come to an end, The Walking Dead franchise has only begun to grow. To date, there have been three spinoff series already created, with three more currently in development. The first of these upcoming spinoffs, Dead City, was announced in March under the title Isle of the Dead. The series' name was changed to Dead City in August, and filming wrapped in October. The Walking Dead: Dead City will consist of six episodes and is set to premiere in April 2023.

In new images posted to Instagram by The Walking Dead, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) make their returns to the zombie franchise in Dead City. The first image shows a new look for Maggie, who is sitting in a bar wearing a leather jacket and gloves, with her hair slicked back. The second image sees Negan, also wearing a leather jacket, staring out over a balcony. The final - and perhaps most telling - image shows Maggie holding a knife to Negan's throat, while Negan looks entirely unbothered. Check out the new images below:

What We Know About Dead City So Far

Negan and Maggie in The Walking Dead finale.

The Walking Dead series finale left fans heartbroken after Rosita's devastating death, but also set up the franchise's upcoming spinoffs perfectly. Rick and Michonne appeared for the final few scenes of the finale for the first time since their departures, teasing what lies ahead in Rick and Michonne. Daryl said goodbye to Carol before leaving Alexandria on his own, setting up his spinoff Daryl Dixon. Finally, while Negan's future wasn't revealed, Maggie alluded to wanting to explore more of the world again as she did in The Walking Dead season 9, setting up Dead City's New York-based story.

Since The Walking Dead: Dead City was first announced, both Cohan and Morgan have been revealing bits of information about the spinoff. Though the actual plot has yet to be revealed, it's been confirmed that Dead City will take place a few years after The Walking Dead ends, and that it will follow Maggie and Negan through New York City. The reasoning for the new location is still a mystery, but while Maggie's finale scene indicates that she wants to discover more of the world, some fans are theorizing that New York may have something to do with finding Rick and the CRM. Morgan has also teased that The Walking Dead: Dead City will be a return to the old Negan.

Not only is it still unclear as to why Maggie and Negan head to New York City, but so is why the two are going anywhere together at all. Maggie and Negan had a painful, emotionally-charged conversation in the Walking Dead finale, which saw Maggie telling Negan that no matter what, she would never forgive him for Glenn's death. Negan seemed genuinely remorseful, but given Morgan's hints that Negan will fall back into his old self in the spinoff, how their relationship together will develop is anyone's guess. With only a few months to go before The Walking Dead: Dead City hits AMC, however, answers will hopefully come soon.
