Former The Walking Dead star Chandler Riggs teased fans on Twitter following news that the popular zombie franchise might bring back deceased characters. Ever since its debut in 2010, The Walking Dead has steadily maintained a high main character body count thanks to the zombie-apocalypse setting of the show. Some deaths stem from the comics the show is based on while others are new additions, but they usually tend to elicit intense emotions from viewers.
The Walking Dead's viewership has seen a decline in recent seasons after once being one of the highest-rated shows on television. However, this hasn't stopped AMC and those behind the show from expanding the franchise, with spin-offs like Fear the Walking Dead and the upcoming The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Soon, the franchise will also make the jump to the big screen with a series of movies following Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes, who was the main character on the show until his departure in season 9. The franchise's chief content officer, Scott Gimple, teased even more Walking Dead growth recently, including Walking Dead projects that could focus on dead characters.
Riggs portrayed Carl Grimes from the very start of the show all the way through season 8, when he died after being bitten by a walker. This decision didn't go over well with fans, especially since Carl was still alive in the comics. With the news that deceased characters could feature into new projects, Riggs took to Twitter to tease fans with a simple side-eye emoji. That was enough to set everyone off with the hope that Carl could return in some form. Check out his Tweet below:
Carl is far from the only deceased character fans would like to see back on their screens. Every time a character dies on The Walking Dead, fans are quick to mourn, and in some cases, share their anger, online. This especially seems to happen whenever the show deviates from the comics, as was the case with Carl's untimely demise. The show will return in February for the second half of The Walking Dead's 10th season, and there is sure to be even more bloodshed ahead.
The news that Gimple is still planning on a lot more Walking Dead content might leave fans divided. While some may be thrilled to spend more time in the universe, the flagship show's dwindling viewership suggests interest in the property might be waning. Perhaps the return of several dearly-departed characters will be enough to entice viewers to return. It does seem like fans are quite excited at the prospect of Carl making a reappearance, and Riggs' recent message might give them some hope, but it also could be that he is just poking fun at the news. For now, Walking Dead fans will just have to wait and see.
The Walking Dead season 10 returns on February 23 on AMC.
