The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln would like to appear in a Star Wars movie. On the surface, it's not surprising that any actor would want to join arguably the biggest film franchise in the world, but Lincoln of course already knows what it's like to play a lead in a huge franchise. As main character Rick Grimes on TWD, Lincoln has been tasked with carrying the emotional heft of the immensely popular series on his back on multiple occasions, although the actor doesn't always get as much respect from fans as he perhaps should.
Another factor likely involved in Lincoln wanting to get involved with Star Wars is that he was born in 1973, making him the right age to have grown up with the original trilogy, and been dazzled by the intergalactic adventures of Luke, Han, and Leia. Before they enter the industry, even the biggest stars are usually fans first, just like everyone else, and it would be unfair to expect that not to influence their career desires at times.
Lincoln made it known that he'd like to become part of the Star Wars universe during Sunday night's edition of TWD post-show Talking Dead. When asked by host Chris Hardwick about what he might have ended up doing if the role of Rick Grimes hadn't been offered to him, Lincoln offered the following amusing response.
"I may have been a cheese maker. Or a pig farmer. But Dave Morrissey and I... we used to sort of joke that we were the only actors in British Equity that hadn't been in the Harry Potter franchise, so maybe I would have been wizarding about Hogwarts or hobbit-ing about Middle Earth, and I always fancied the idea of getting my hands around a lightsaber."
In addition to revealing Lincoln's wish to one day wield a lightsaber, his answer also serves to remind fans of the fact that he's British, something that can sometimes be forgotten due to Rick Grimes sporting a southern accent. Lincoln has in some ways become so closely identified with Rick that he might at first seem an odd fit for a potential Star Wars role, but Lincoln has shown via pre-Walking Dead roles in projects like Love Actually that he is capable of much more than playing the glowering badass type. Plus, Star Wars has a storied history of getting great work out of British actors.
Were Lincoln ever to end up actually acting in a Star Wars movie, one wonders whether he'd be assigned a heroic character or a villainous one. While Rick is ostensibly the main hero of TWD, he's also gone through many dark times, and shown a willingness to commit horrific acts for what he believes to be the greater good. In that respect, Lincoln would probably be just as capable of playing either side of the force, should he be asked to.
The Walking Dead season 8 airs Sundays on AMC.
