Volkswagen has unveiled its first-ever electric sedan, the ID.7, at CES 2023, with a psychedelic, light-up paint job being one of its highlights. As the race for market share in the EV scene heats up, some analysts consider the German automaker to be one of the front-runners for the top EV maker. Findings from a Bloomberg Intelligence study predict that Volkswagen could unseat Tesla as the biggest EV producer next year.

Volkswagen has given this year's CES attendees and the entire world a peek at what its all-new electric sedan looks like. Draped in smart QR code-themed camouflage, the ID.7 can generate electroluminescent light effects on certain parts of its body through a combination of technology and multilayered paintwork. It should be added that the QR codes, though part of the design, are real and can be scanned. Essentially, around 22 sections of the exterior will light up either at the driver's command or in tune with the sound system’s beats. Sections of the paintwork come alive when music is playing, turning the car's exterior into a music visualizer.

What To Expect From The ID.7

The Volkswagen ID.7 on the move

Apart from the paint job, other details about the ID.7 are scarce since this is just a prototype. The ID.7’s distinctive traits comprise the aerodynamic front section and roof which, based on their design, aid in the reduction of energy consumption. This also increases range efficiency. It works by placing air intakes at the front end, channeling the air that flows through them down the EV’s sides to the rear in a coordinated manner. This, in turn, creates an air curtain that regulates the flow at the sedan’s sides. The roof slanting to the rear helps the car to have a high drag coefficient.

Regarding its innovative features, the Volkswagen ID.7 is expected to offer a new display concept, an augmented reality heads-up display, a 15-inch screen, air-conditioning controls that are incorporated into the infotainment system’s first level, and illuminated touch sliders. The air-conditioning system features intelligent vents and some new functionalities. For example, the system can tell when the driver is approaching the EV based on the key’s proximity and initiate the cooling or heating process depending on the weather.

Volkswagen claims that the electric sedan can offer a range of up to 434 miles, though the EPA hasn't confirmed this yet. Additionally, certain factors like outdoor temperature, driving style, and speed may reduce the driving range. It is one of the automaker's 10 new electric models slated for release by 2026. The Volkswagen ID.7 will be sold in three main markets – China, North America, and Europe.
