As viewers enjoy the newest season 4 of the ultimate escapist TV, Virgin River, the cliffhangers that the show is famous for are only getting more and more suspenseful. Besides the comfort aspect of the hit Netflix show, the twists and turns in the plot are also what keep fans hooked to the show.

Mel, Jack, Hope, and the townspeople have interesting and colorful lives indeed, which is why the plot only thickens with each episode in Virgin River. Even then, no one saw these surprises coming as they binged the romantic drama.

Jack And Charmaine's Relationship

As the relationship between Jack and Mel grew, fans became excited about the love story that was about to transpire. The charming bartender was finally convincing Mel to stay back in the town, and the romance was just getting warmed up — except Jack was revealed to have a partner.

The nature of Jack and Charmaine's relationship was unknown at first, but later it became clear that Jack wanted it casual while Charmaine wanted something more. The bigger plot twist was still in store: when Charmaine revealed she was pregnant.

Mel Leaving For LA

Mel Monroe - Virgin River

Seeing the best characters of Virgin River get separated by Charmaine's machinations was bad enough, but fans were in for a shock when Mel chose not to fight, but to leave town instead. Usually, the romantic lead is expected to tussle for what's hers, but Mel lay down her weapons and fled to LA.

The pregnancy and her baggage were too much to bear for poor Mel, who had been through the emotional wringer the past year. The kicker was that she didn't tell Jack when she left.

Paige's History

Paige angrily talking

Unassuming Paige and Christopher were likable characters, but they had a lot going on under the surface. Named Michelle Logan, Paige was a brave survivor of an abusive marriage who had left her home with her son and changed identities.

Viewers didn't expect domestic violence to be the secret that Paige hid so desperately, but Virgin River has a way of surprising its audience with the most human problems and twists.

Jack Getting Shot

Jack gets shot

Season 2 ended with a bang, quite literally, as Jack was shot by an unknown intruder at his bar. The finale ended with Jack bleeding out, and Mel trying to save his life.

While it was a given that Jack would survive, fans did not expect to see the main character shot down so suddenly. It was completely out of the blue, and getting to know who shot Jack was a burning question that fans wanted to be answered in season 4, and it delivered.

Mel Deciding To Use The Embryos

For somebody who could stay ultra calm during medical emergencies, Mel sure was impulsive when it came to her personal life. After Jack broke up with her because he couldn't father another child, she flew to LA and decided to use the remaining embryos she had with Mark.

Things got further complicated when she got back with Jack and then got a positive pregnancy test after. Season 3 ended with a half proposal, and a paternity test hanging in the air.

Wes' Twin Vince Coming To Town

Vince in Virgin River

With Wes back in town, things got dangerous for a while, but it seemed as if Paige would get some relief when she pushed Wes down the stairs in defense and ended up killing him. However, fans were in for a rude shock with Wes was seen walking and talking again — except it was his twin brother.

Vince was as dirty a cop as Wes was and also as ruthless, which was bad news for Paige, who had no option but to flee the lovely Virgin River to stay safe.

Lilly's Death

Lilly sits down for a moment after getting tired

Sweet, endearing Lilly had always been an irreplaceable part of the town, but she had been having a hard time since her husband passed. With Chloe in her life and her other daughter Tara around, people were hoping that her arc would improve dramatically, but it was not to be.

Lilly was diagnosed with an advanced stage of pancreatic cancer, which was killing her every day. Just as audiences and the townspeople came to terms with this, she suddenly died of a stroke in her sleep, which was deeply tragic.

Doc's Grandson

Doc's grandson arrives at the B&B

Doc and Hope had had no children, and none from other relationships either, so when Doc's grandson turned up in Virgin River, everyone was left scratching their heads. It raised many questions about who Denny was, and which partner of Doc's he was a product of.

It was also unknown what his intentions were for the good Doctor, but his intentions turned out to be noble in the end, and sadly he wasn't going to live for very long either.

Hope's Accident

While Hope stayed away from season 3 physically, fans were eager to see her come back. However, things didn't work out (as they do) and she met with a fatal accident on her way back to the Virgin river for Lilly's funeral.

Hope was left with brain damage, which was something that fans were not expecting. Her personality was what made Virgin River so special, which was why this accident was a huge surprise and not a very pleasant one.

Charmaine's Revelation About The Twins

Season 4 was easily the best one yet, and as per tradition, it ended with a bomb of a revelation. As Mel and Jack rushed to Charmaine's calls for help, they were met with a distraught woman who cried about Todd leaving her.

Something was going wrong with her pregnancy, and in the heat of the moment, she revealed to Jack that karma had gotten to her for lying about him being their father. While audiences had suspected something revelatory about the twins to be in the new season, it was not as explosive as this.
