Actor Vin Diesel is pursuing a new creative art in the form of music, and has already released his debut single, "Feel Like I Do." The now-singing actor is perhaps most well-known for his work on The Fast and the Furious franchise, but has also taken on more unconventional roles like voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Most recently, Diesel took on the role of a soldier superhero in the movie Bloodshot, which unfortunately released right at the start of the coronavirus pandemic and had a limited run in theaters.

Though Diesel has made a name for himself as a strong, tough action hero, he’s always had a love for art and storytelling that goes beyond action films. In an interview with Screen Rant a few years ago, Diesel talked about his love for Dungeons & Dragons that influenced his career decisions. Now, Diesel is demonstrating how his love of music is influencing the next step in his career.

Diesel revealed his new song, "Feel Like I Do," as part of a spot on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week. The actor talks about how honored he felt to debut his own music on Clarkson’s show, since she was able to make a name for herself in the music industry. Diesel’s new song is a collaboration with the Norwegian music producer Kygo, who has previously released remixes of music icons Donna Summers and Tina Turner. The song "Feel Like I Do" features Diesel’s low, smooth vocals over a surprisingly upbeat pop track. As the song plays, Clarkson’s Zoom audience dances along. Diesel’s decision to move to music may seem unusual, but it’s not unprecedented. The most obvious example of actors transitioning to the music industry is the wealth of young Disney Channel stars, who often seem to have a direct pipeline to pop stardom. There’s not many direct comparisons for an action movie star like Diesel entering the music scene, but that’s not necessarily an indication of success or failure. What matters most is the quality of the music.

As for whether the music is good, it’s certainly well produced, and Diesel’s vocals are more unique than the average pop singer. However, it’s hard to determine the quality of a new artist based on just one song, especially a collaboration that relies so much on the skill of the music producer rather than the singer. Diesel will have to release more original music if he wants to make a name for himself as a pop star.
