Over the years, San Diego Comic-Con has become synonymous with big eyebrow-raising announcements. Movie and comic book fanatics know this and it is only one of the many reasons they push aside any and all prior engagements in order to attend.

While the 2013 edition of the SDCC has been as exciting as ever, it has been light on bombshells so far, but that could all change very soon, according to Fast & Furious 7 star Vin Diesel.

Diesel - who has stirred up plenty of speculation about a potential role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after meeting with the studio last week - appeared at the Riddick SDCC panel on Friday to help promote the latest entry in the space-horror series (check out the new trailer that was unveiled). However, as the panel seemed to be wrapping up, one fan posed this Marvel-related question:

“Every movie you get in, you become the face of that franchise. What is your vision for the upcoming Marvel movies?”

To which, Diesel replied:

“There is some very big news coming at the end of this month.” [Laughing] “Poor Marvel. Poor, poor Marvel.”

After Diesel left last week's meeting seemingly impressed with what Marvel had to say (or offer?), we hoped either party would reveal something about Diesel's involvement with a Marvel project this week and although Diesel's coy answer doesn't tell us who he'll be playing, it's about as close to a confirmation we can get that he will be cast in a Marvel Studios film.

After news initially surfaced that Diesel was in talks for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, our minds immediately went to Marvel's upcoming space odyssey Guardians of the Galaxy, which is currently in full casting mode. Over the past few months, the James Gunn-led project has already added Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Benicio Del Toro as The Collector, Karen Gillan as Nebula, WWE star Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Glenn Close as a leader of Nova Corps, and John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey. However, there are still a couple of big roles that haven't been filled, including Rocket Raccoon and Thanos.

Thanos Actor Talks Role

With his signature deep, gruff voice, Diesel would seem to be a better fit for the villainous Mad Titan, Thanos. Add in the tough-guy persona he brings to the table and such a casting would make plenty of sense.

However, it's also entirely possible that he could be playing the android Vision in an upcoming Marvel project like The Avengers 2. Diesel has long been rumored for the part after posting an image of Vision on his Facebook page last year, before quickly taking it down. The panel fan's question even seemed to hint at the same possibility.

Considering Diesel will be beginning production on Fast & Furious 7 later this year, a voiced-character role would probably fit his schedule better, but since both Vision and Thanos would require a heavy dose of CGI and not as much live acting from Diesel as other characters might, that doesn't really rule out one or the other.

With the Marvel Studios panel slated for tomorrow (Saturday, July 20) at SDCC, we, like all of you, will be eagerly awaiting any and all announcements related to its upcoming film projects. Diesel said we would hear something near the end of the month, but maybe tomorrow's the day we find out who he'll be playing. Stay tuned for the latest and keep checking back for updates from SDCC 2013!
