Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 & 3 Officially Renewed At Netflix

Warning: Spoilers for Vikings: Valhalla season 1.

Netflix's latest historical drama Vikings: Valhalla has officially been renewed for season 2 and season 3. Acting as a sequel to the History Channel drama Vikings, the show takes place over a hundred years after the events of its parent series and follows the exploits of legendary Norse explorers Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) and his sister Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), as well as the ambitious King of Norway Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter). The Netflix series first premiered on the streaming service on February 25, 2022 and has since gone on to achieve much critical acclaim, with many particularly praising it for the sheer amount of blood-thirsty fun that it offers audiences.

Vikings: Valhalla season 1 is set against the backdrop of a 9th century Britain split between the warring factions of the Christian monarchy of England and the Pagan Norseman, and charts the beginning of the end of the Viking Age. The season concluded with the Battle of Kattegat, resulting in the defeat of Olaf Haraldsson (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) as leader of the port town by King Forkbeard (Søren Pilmark), and Freydís and Harald leaving Kattegat for unknown destinations. Along with Erikson, Eiríksdóttir, and Sigurdsson, the series also features other famous figures from the era, such as Canute (Bradley Freegard), Earl Godwin (David Oakes), and Emma of Norway (Laura Berlin).

It has now been confirmed by Netflix that fans will be treated to even more of Leif and Freydís' adventures as Vikings: Valhalla seasons 2 and 3 will be coming to the streaming platform. Netflix revealed this information alongside a short video featuring a montage of action-oriented clips from the first season cut with the show's broadcast achievements of having "more than 194 million hours viewed in its first 9 days" and being in the "top 10 series in 90 countries". The revelation that the streaming giant has commissioned seasons 2 and 3 well-illustrates the confidence Netflix has in Vikings: ValhallaThis is further exemplified by the fact that the announcement is accompanied by declarations of success the show has been enjoying across its less-than-two-week run, suggesting that the remarkable level of international viewership for the first season was a major part in the decision to grant the series a second and third season simultaneously. Whilst the post doesn't provide any further details on what can be expected plot-wise from the future of Vikings: Valhalla, it's likely that these new seasons will begin to focus more on Leif and Freydís' famous expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean to become the first Europeans to set foot-on and colonize North America.

Fans who have been swept up by the binge-worthy historical drama will undoubtedly welcome this news with open arms, especially given that Vikings: Valhalla season 2 may not be far-off based on how quickly the series was renewed. For those who have yet to watch the internationally-acclaimed show, this announcement may finally convince some to give the series a shot, particularly with its additional selling-point of showcasing its impressive viewership success. But regardless of whether this renewal will help boost these viewing figures even further or not, it's clear that Vikings: Valhalla has now fully cemented itself as Netflix's latest hit series.
