New images from Vikings: Valhalla season 2 tease Leif, Freydis, and Harald's arduous journey as well as a release date for the new episodes. Valhalla is the sequel spin-off series to the historical drama Vikings, which ran six seasons on the History Channel and Amazon Prime Video, before wrapping in December 2020. The success of the eight-episode first season has led to huge anticipation over the upcoming season 2, especially with its shocking final episode, which ended on a cliffhanger.

The show premiered on February 25, 2022, and in March Netflix greenlit Vikings: Valhalla seasons 2 and 3, with many fans wondering when the second season may arrive. Speculation has been rife about when the follow-up may drop on Netflix, and, in a tweet shared by the official Netflix Twitter account, Netflix Geeked said “The epic journey continues,” and revealed that Vikings: Valhalla season 2 has been slated for a January 12, 2023 release. The images also reveal several interesting tidbits about the upcoming season, including Harald, Leif, and Freydis' journey after the bombshell ending.

What To Expect From Vikings: Valhalla Season 2

Vikings was a hugely successful show that spanned 89 episodes and reached a conclusion that proved popular with a lot of fans. Whilst Vikings: Valhalla is a spinoff sequel, the series is set over 100 years after the events of Vikings, and features new characters in the same universe. The show focuses on the end of the Viking Age and the climactic Battle of Stamford Bridge, which took place in 1066, and the Vikings: Valhalla season 2 plot is likely to explore the power vaccuum left by Haakon's death, over Kattegat's next leader, as well as the fall-out from Harald's betrayal and alliance with Kåre. With many plot threads scattered, there will be plenty of scope for epic storytelling in season 2.

With Netflix having renewed Vikings: Valhalla for season 2 and season 3, there is plenty riding on this next season to be a hit. The streaming platform may consistently roll our new originals, but many of those face cancelations quite early. Fans of Vikings will no doubt be hoping that Valhalla can run its course long enough to tell its story and tie up plot strands. Whilst it might be unlikely for it to run the 6 seasons of its parent show, there does appear to be an appetite from viewers to revisit this world again.

Creator Jeb Stuart has remained tight-lipped on how many seasons are planned for the popular show, and much of this will depend on how successful Vikings: Valhalla season 2 is. Netflix has shown it is not afraid to pull shows that are underperforming, and fans will be hoping that Vikings: Valhalla is not one that receives a premature cancelation before it has hit its peak. For now, season 2 is imminent, and Vikings: Valhalla season 3 is currently filming in Ireland, and fans will hope the new seasons can hit the ground running.
