Vikings is currently in a midseason break and it’s unknown when it will be back, so fans are left wondering what the fate of the remaining characters will be – and one of the biggest mysteries the series is yet to solve is what happened to Floki. The eccentric boat builder was last seen trapped in a cave, and though it hasn’t been revealed if he will come back, there’s one big clue teasing his survival and return. Created by Michael Hirst, Vikings debuted on History Channel in 2013, and even though it was originally planned to be a miniseries, it was quickly renewed for s second season.

Vikings initially followed legendary Norse figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his travels alongside his Viking brothers, among those Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), his best friend and an exceptional boat builder. As the series progressed, it shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own journeys, making them the protagonists, more so after Ragnar’s death in season 4. However, many other characters from season 1 stayed and their stories were explored a bit further, as is the case of Floki.

After many tragedies, including the death of his wife, Helga, and their daughters (one of them adopted), Floki went on his own way and ended up discovering the volcanic island of Iceland. Floki’s fate is currently a mystery, though many fans believe he will come back in the final episodes of the series – and they might be right, as there’s one big clue pointing at his return.

Vikings Season 6 Soundtrack Teases Floki’s Return

Vikings Floki Gustaf Skarsgard

Season 5’s episode “What Happens in the Cave” saw Floki entering a cave he believed to be an entrance to Helheim, as he became disillusioned with the Gods after what happened to his settlement in Iceland. Floki didn’t find the answers he was looking for inside the cave, and instead came across with something worse (for him, that is): a Christian cross. Floki had always been very loyal to the Gods, so much that he didn’t like Athelstan, a Christian monk, and his influence on Ragnar. Unfortunately, the cave was inside an active volcano, which erupted and trapped him inside.

Some fans are convinced Floki will return as Skarsgård was spotted on set when season 6 was filming, but the soundtrack of Vikings season 6 has the biggest clue about Floki’s fate. According to SoundtrackTracklist (via NME), track #26 is titled “Floki Tells of Why He Left Iceland”, pointing at his survival and possible return. With Ubbe in Iceland looking for him, the second part of Vikings season 6 could see a reunion of these two characters, allowing viewers to learn what happened to Floki since the eruption of the volcano and if/how much his views have changed after that experience.
