Part 1 of Vikings season 6 ended with a major cliffhanger involving Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig), making viewers wonder if he will be part of the remainder of the season or if they have seen the last of Kattegat’s king. Created by Michael Hirst, Vikings made its debut on History Channel in 2013, and even though it was originally planned to be a miniseries, it was quickly renewed for a second season, and so viewers got to fully explore the stories of its many (and complex) characters.

Vikings initially followed the travels of legendary Norse figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his Viking brothers, from the beginning of the Viking age – marked by the Lindisfarne raid, which is shown in season 1 – onward. The series gradually shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own journeys, becoming the protagonists, although two have been the main focus since Ragnar's death: Bjorn Ironside and Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen).

Vikings’ sixth and final season has seen some big battles and the deaths of major characters like Lagertha, and its midseason finale wasn’t left behind, teasing the (possible?) death of another main character.

Vikings: Did Bjorn Die In Season 6’s Midseason Finale?

Vikings season 6 midseason finale Bjorn dead

The midseason finale of Vikings season 6, titled “The Best Laid Plans”, saw the battle between the Rus (led by Ivar) and the Vikings (led by Bjorn). Intertwined with a conversation between Bjorn and Ivar at the beach, viewers witnessed a major battle with many casualties, but what they surely weren’t expecting, no matter how many horrible things he has done in the past, was Ivar stabbing Bjorn with a sword. Obviously, it’s a serious injury, with Bjorn lying in the battlefield, seemingly ready to be taken to Valhalla. Of course, fans weren’t happy to see this, but as Bjorn wasn’t exactly dead when the episode ended, is there a possibility that he will survive?

Speaking to ET, Hirst shared that, although King Harald (Peter Franzén) and Bjorn are very badly wounded, “we haven’t actually seen them dead”. Hirst insisted on how severe their wounds are and how difficult it would be for them to fully recover, but also added that he “wouldn’t be quite certain that they’re dead yet”, simply because, once more, “we haven’t seen them dead yet”. Meanwhile, in a separate interview with TV Guide, Ludwig said that fans will see Bjorn “in some way, shape, or form” in the second part of season 6. Bjorn Ironside’s fate is unknown, but it’s very likely that he won’t be alive for long once the next episode arrives. Bjorn is not dead yet, but he can still be present in the remaining episodes through flashbacks and visions, as Vikings has done with other characters before, most notably his father, Ragnar.
