New information has been revealed about the upcoming season 5 of Vikings at San Diego Comic Con 2017 (SDCC). First premiering on the History Channel in 2013, Vikings is inspired by the sagas of legendary Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons as they attempt to conquer England, France and other locations across medieval Europe created by Michael Hirst, who also serves as the series' sole writer.

The fifth season will be taking the historical drama in a different direction though, with the death of Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) last year, the new run will be shifting focus to his brood of vicious sons - Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig), Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh), Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) and Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) - as they attempt to conquer uncharted lands and go up against a new enemy, Bishop Heahmund played by newcomer Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Announced yesterday at SDCC, it has been revealed that the new season of Vikings will be premiering Wednesday, November 29 at 9 PM ET/PT on the History Channel with a two-hour episode. Here is what Arturo Interian, Senior Vice President, Scripted Programming at History, said about the season premiere:

Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Vikings Season 5

“Vikings’ is about bold storytelling. When Michael Hirst told us his epic plans for the season premiere, we needed two hours to tell it properly. Season five is taking our Vikings to uncharted lands we’ve never seen on the series before.”

An official description of season 5 was also revealed highlighting a big season for Ragnar's most vicious son Ivar, who we last saw lodge an axe into his brother Sigurd's (David Lindström) chest. It also reveals that our favorite vikings are going to be traveling the world reaching destinations far and wide as they set out to conquer the world. Here is the description:

"Season five begins with Ivar the Boneless asserting his leadership over the Great Heathen Army, while Lagertha reigns as Queen of Kattegat. Ivar’s murder of his brother Sigurd sets the stage for vicious battles to come as Ragnar’s sons plot their next moves after avenging their father’s death. Bjorn follows his destiny into the Mediterranean Sea and Floki who is suffering from the loss of his wife Helga, takes to the seas submitting himself to the will of the Gods. This season is full of startling alliances and unbelievable betrayals as the Vikings fight to rule the world."

We also have a look at the season 5 trailer revealed at SDCC, which reveals a bloody civil war to come as brothers fight brothers, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) faces-off against Ivar for control of Kattegat and a new enemy rises. Check out the trailer below:

Based on the new trailer and season description, it's going to be an exciting season for Vikings as the series moves past the era of Ragnar and expands out into the edges of the world where the vikings have yet to step foot. We will have to wait until November though to see if Vikings can stand on its own without its central character of four and a half years.
