The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is an American institution just like the Super Bowl or Mcdonald’s. There’s a ton of history in the Academy - almost double both previous examples. For 90 consecutive years, it has hosted an awards show that is the most comprehensive record of acting prowess in the American pantheon. It recognizes the best of the best in film, and serves as the ultimate authority on cinematic greatness. Because of this, the Academy record book is dense, telling the history of American film through winners and losers in dozens of categories. Some of these superlatives stand out more than others. While everyone knows about Hattie McDaniel and Denzel, the Adrien Brody/Halle Berry fiasco, and Meryl Streep’s continuously expanding legend, the following are memorable moments that aren’t yet historical fixtures - but they should be.
