Video Interview: 'Conan The Barbarian's' Jason Momoa On Brutal Heroes, 82 Deaths, And The Future Of 'Conan'

Conan the Barbarian movie trailer

Jason Momoa has had quite a year.

As little as a year and a half ago, the actor would have been considered (as his most recent onscreen nemesis/co-star Rose McGowan has said) a relative unknown. He had a loyal fan base from his work on Stargate: Atlantis and Baywatch, of course; however, it was his portrayal of savage and fearsome leader Khal Drogo on HBO's Game of Thrones that really propelled Momoa into the center of the public's eye.

This weekend the actor takes a step further into the fishbowl with his interpretation of writer Robert E. Howard's iconic character Conan The Barbarian. The actor was deeply committed to capturing a Conan he felt was in line with Howard's original tales and the work of artist Frank Frazetta. For Momoa, Conan is a man's man who "loves his women and loves his drink." We had the chance to sit down with the actor at the Los Angeles press event for Conan to talk about Frazetta, playing the "working man's hero" and what he hopes to see in future iterations of the franchise.

Before we get to our video interview, here's a synopsis of the film and a handy timeline of the discussion topics:

The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back this Summer. Having thrived and evolved for eight consecutive decades in the public imagination- in prose and graphics, on the big screen and small, in games and properties of all kinds- Conan’s exploits in the Hyborian Age now come alive like never before in a colossal 3D action-adventure film.

A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.

Deftly adapted from the original works of Robert E. Howard and faithful to the mythology and psychology of his iconic character -- "Conan The Barbarian."
