Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick doesn't believe players are interested in game subscription services and only really want to play a few newer game titles each month. With streaming subscription services such as PlayStation Now and Xbox Game Pass out there, Zelnick thinks players would rather just have a few "high value" games each month instead.

Take-Two Interactive publishes some of the biggest AAA titles in the world, including games by studios such as Rockstar and 2K. With Rockstar releasing Red Dead Redemption 2 under the Take-Two banner, these comments suggest that the company isn't all that interested in working with streaming subscription services for that title. These services generally only offer older titles anyway, something that Zelnick believes gamers just aren't all that interested in.

In an interview in MCVUK, as reported by WCCFTech, Zelnick spoke about how Take-Two Interactive sees these subscription services and whether his company wants to offer its games with them:

"A subscription model would have to speak to consumer needs and interests first and foremost. You’d have to believe that consumers want a lot of video games in a given month to choose from and the model under which those can be distributed now somehow doesn’t work for consumers. I’m not sure consumers like to play lots and lots of video games a month. I think they tend to focus on a small number of high value titles. I’m not sure they’re looking for a huge number of catalog titles and I think the economic model is very beneficial to consumers now."

He also mentioned that the company supports Xbox Game Pass, but only for those games they feel it makes sense for. Other publishers have jumped on the subscription streaming model, including EA. Yet, others agree with Zelnick, including Ubisoft, who feel that streaming via cloud is a good idea, but that the streaming subscription services aren't the way to do it. To sum up, cloud gaming, in general, is good, but streaming subscription services for old titles is not.

Take-Two is gearing up for one of the most anticipated titles of the year: Red Dead Redemption 2. Releasing this fall, the game returns players to the Wild West in a prequel story to the first game. In the new game, players will join the Van der Linde gang "as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive." The company already believes the title will be a big hit and considering how long players have waited for it, that's an easy statement to make.

Zelnick makes a valid point about streaming subscription services. Most of the games offered are older titles that many players have already played once, and many aren't the kind of games players want to play again. Players get excited, though, about newer and bigger titles, and that's probably more in line with what they want to spend their money on at the end of the day.
