WARNING! This post contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 1 and George R. R. Martin's book Fire & Blood!Vhagar has proven to be very powerful in House of the Dragon, but the formidable Vermithor rivals her. In House of the Dragon season 1, episode 10, Vhagar's strength and size are shown in her easy defeat of Prince Lucerys and Arrax. Little is shown of Vermithor in the first season; his first owner was King Jaehaerys Targaryen I, and he was featured briefly in the prologue of episode 1. Jaehaerys I was the predecessor to Viserys I, making his dragon at least 100 years old, while Vhagar is closer to 180. In the House of the Dragon season 1 finale, “The Black Queen,” Daemon is seen singing to Vermithor in the dragon pit, setting up his future involvement in the Dance of the Dragons.

Vhagar is the biggest of the living dragons, but that does not mean Vermithor is weaker. He is the second largest of all 17 dragons featured in the show, and his appearance in House of the Dragon season 1, episode 10 depicts him as a fearsome and lethal beast. Vermithor's younger age could also be a factor in his ability compared to Vhagar, as he may be the faster or stronger of the two despite his smaller size. Vermithor’s lack of a rider could make him hard to control, and therefore more difficult to utilize in the Dance of the Dragons, but as seen in the House of the Dragon season 1 finale, Vhagar can't always be controlled by his rider either. Still, Vhagar has seen more battles than Vermithor, which possibly gives her an edge. Ultimately, though, it is impossible to say which dragon is more powerful as the two dragons never battle each other.

What Happens To Vermithor In House Of The Dragon

House Of The Dragon Daemon Targaryen Vermithor

Vermithor has an interesting path ahead of him in House of the Dragon if the show stays true to his story in the source material, George R. R. Martin's book Fire & Blood. Despite Daemon being the one to awaken him, Vermithor finds a different character, who is yet to be seen in House of the Dragon, worthy of being his rider. Many characters attempt to bond with the dragon, yet Vermithor refuses or burns all of them until he finally chooses the bastard son of a blacksmith, Hugh Hammer, who'll likely appear in season 2.

Hugh Hammer and Vermithor fight in the Dance of the Dragons together, with Hugh betraying Rhaenyra in favor of Aegon . Then he later attempts to claim the throne himself. In the Second Battle of Tumbleton, toward the end of the Targaryen civil war, Hugh is killed before he can reach his dragon. Shortly after, Vermithor, riderless again, engages in battle with two dragons, Seasmoke and Tessarion, and is killed.

How Vhagar Is Killed During The Dance Of The Dragons

Vhagar in House Of The Dragon

As depicted in the book Fire & Blood, Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar prove to be a huge threat to the black army throughout the Dance of the Dragons. Due to this, Daemon Targaryen and his dragon, Caraxes, hunt down the prince and his powerful dragon. At Harrenhal, Caraxes and Vhagar meet and launch into battle. Both dragons and their riders are killed in the ensuing fight. Vhagar is 181 years old when she dies. Whether this winds up being Vhagar's fate in House of the Dragon will remain unknown until near the end of the HBO series.
