Venom: Let There Be Carnage star Tom Hardy seemingly teases a battle between Venom and Spider-Man on social media before deleting the post entirely. Hardy made his Marvel universe debut as Eddie Brock/Venom in the 2018 film Venom, which was a massive financial success. Surpassing expectations to earn $856.1 million at the worldwide box office, Venom bolstered Sony's hopes for their own Spider-Man cinematic universe. A sequel was soon ordered, and for a long time, Venom 2 was expected to arrive in October of this year. However, on Tuesday the film received both an official title and a brand new release date: June 25, 2021.

Hardy will return for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which will also feature the official debut of Woody Harrelson's Cletus Kasady. Cletus was previously teased in Venom's post-credits scene, and fans have been eager for more information about his role in the sequel ever since. In the comics, Cletus is a serial killer who later becomes the villainous symbiote Carnage. As the official title suggests, he'll be front and center in this new film, which has kept the rest of its plot details tightly under wraps.

Following a day full of announcements regarding Venom: Let There Be CarnageHardy made a post on Instagram that seemed to tease a fight between Venom and his comic book nemesis Spider-Man. The post was soon deleted, but Twitter user Brandon Davis was able to screenshot it and share it separately. See it for yourself down below:

The possibility of Spider-Man appearing in one of Sony's spin-off films has long been rumored. Spider-Man is currently played by Tom Holland in the MCU, a move that's allowed only because of a deal Sony has with Marvel. While Venom remained separate from the MCU, rumors have swirled suggesting Holland could make a cameo in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Sony's other upcoming Spider-Man film, Morbius, already has a confirmed MCU connection through Michael Keaton's Vulture, so a Spider-Man appearance in Venom: Let There Be Carnage isn't entirely out of the question.

Whether Hardy was teasing a cameo that's actually going to happen or simply hyping up his film that just received a lot of attention is unclear, but it is interesting that he ended up deleting the post. Something like a Spider-Man cameo would be big news, and one that Sony would probably like to keep a secret for a while. Now that Venom: Let There Be Carnage isn't going to be released for more than a year, it'll likely be a while before anything is made official.
