Tom Hardy posts a new behind the scenes photo from Venom that teases filming may have wrapped on Sony's upcoming superhero film. After a superhero universe false-start with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony Pictures struck a deal with Marvel Studios that led to the introduction of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Holland's wall-crawler made his solo movie debut last summer with Spider-Man: Homecoming, and will return for at least three confirmed upcoming films. Meanwhile, Sony has been developing their own superhero universe that may or may not connect to the MCU.

First, Sony announced the Hardy-starring Venom directed by Ruben Fleischer was in the works, and filming on Venom kicked off late in 2017. Then, Sony tapped director Gina Prince-Bythewood for Silver and Black, a movie focused on Spider-Man characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. Further movies in development include Morbius the Living Vampire, Kraven, and Mysterio, but it's likely Sony is waiting to see how Venom performs at the box office and with critics before banking too much on their superhero universe. Now, it seems Venom has taken a major step forward.

Tom Hardy posted a photo to Instagram of himself in what appears to be a hair and makeup trailer on the set of Venom. The photo doesn't reveal anything new about Hardy's Eddie Brock and the caption  is confusingly lacking in punctuation, but the post seems to indicate Venom has wrapped filming. Take a look at the Instagram post:

Venom started production in late October 2017, and continued filming through the past few months, with Hardy releasing set photos periodically to offer fans a glimpse at the highly anticipated movie. We've gotten a fair share of set photos and videos teasing action sequences, and what Hardy will look like as Eddie Brock fighting the Venom symbiote. In terms of official promotional material, though, content has been sparse. Sony recently revealed a first look image from Venom of Hardy as Eddie Brock.

However, we've yet to see Hardy suited up as Venom, though we know the performance will include motion capture. Undoubtedly, the film's success will rest a great deal on how that mocap comes across on screen, and whether Hardy is able to sell the wild-looking symbiote. It's possible we'll get a look at Hardy as Venom is an image ahead of any footage, but fans won't truly know what to expect of Venom's titular symbiote until the first trailer debuts. Since Venom doesn't hit theaters until October, though, it may be some time before a teaser arrives.

Until then, fans can at least keep an eye on Hardy's Instagram, where the actor has posted a number of teasing behind the scenes photos from the set of Venom. It's unclear if filming has truly wrapped on Venom based on Hardy's photo alone, but it's likely the movie will finish up principal photography sometime soon.
