There is a new age dawning in the world of Marvel's Venom comics. But even if Eddie Brock is alive, and healing, there is just no way of ignoring the most painful truth possible: his symbiote Other is dead. And with it, their shared identity of Venom. So... what now?

While the death of Venom might normally be a massive development, the last years of Venom have seen Donny Cates taking Eddie to larger and larger heights and stakes. That ascent seemed to culminate in the recent Absolute Carnage event, when Cletus Kasady was resurrected with help from Knull, the Symbiote God. In the end Eddie and his symbiote manages to win the day. But symbiotes are harder to kill, which is why Eddie took the two symbiote to an isolated island -- in hopes of killing the Carnage entity for good. Despite the odds, Eddie survived (after losing one of his hands). But the symbiote? It wasn't so lucky.

Going into the story arc, Donny Cates promised that "Venom Island" would change Eddie Brock forever, which turned out to refer to more than just his hand. Eddie succeeded in separating the Carnage and Venom symbiotes with help from Thor, but he was suddenly rescued by Captain America and the Avengers... who then napalm-ed the island, burning both good and evil symbiotes out of existence. And lest anyone suspect that the new preview for Venom #24 is misdirection, Cates confirmed that Captain America killed the Venom symbiote with his bombing, explaining to Syfy how this shocking loss fits into his larger plans for Venom:

I've structured my entire run with pieces that reflect each other and talk to each other. What I mean by that is that Volume 1: "Rex" is about the symbiote and symbiote lore. Volume 2: "The Abyss" is a reflection of that in that it looked at Eddie's lore, diving deep into who Eddie Brock is and his family. Absolute Carnage is a prelude to a larger thing, and we'll see the opposite of what that is coming very soon. With Venom Island, we're looking back at his history, revisiting certain things from Venom's past.

This is a spoiler for Venom #23. Eddie makes it off the island with help from the Avengers, but he leaves without the symbiote, which stays on the island. As he leaves, Eddie looks back in horror to see that the Avengers have dropped a nuke on the island. Where we are right now is that it's all over. The symbiote and the Carnage symbiote have been wiped off the face of the earth. It's all over.

The official preview pages from Venom #24 make good on that description, following Eddie as he awakens to find his reality changed forever. Because for the first time ever, it really is his reality, alone:
