Warning! Spoilers ahead for Venom #27

Venom, Marvel's Lethal Protector, just got a massive upgrade. Transported to a possible future that appears as though Knull the Symbiote God succeeds in his symbiote invasion and assimilation of Earth, Eddie Brock is in for more than a few surprises in his latest series from Marvel Comics.

His symbiote is reacting to their new surroundings in some really cool ways, meaning new powers for Venom to access and use, including one that very seems very similar to a power seen in the recent Godzilla films.

New powers aren't the only thing coming Venom's way in Venom #27, written by Donny Cates and drawn by Juan Gedeon. Firstly, Eddie and his symbiote aren't alone. When they were unwittingly transported to this dark future, Eddie's son Dylan was with them. Dylan is an interesting kid, possessing a mysterious ability to control and manipulate any symbiotes he comes into contact with, which might indicate a possible connection to Knull himself. Not only that, but the father, symbiote, and son were also followed by an all new Venom villain: Virus. Virus is a complete newcomer, wearing a cobbled together and painted War Machine armor, whose true identity is as of yet unknown. However, he does have a pretty big axe to grind with Venom for some reason that has yet to be clarified, seemingly alluding to a history the two characters had before he became Virus. He attacks Venom right off the bat, but as the two fight, Eddie's symbiote alerts him of one their new powers, and together they unleash it right in Virus' face.

Apparently, Venom can now absorb energy from attacks and redistribute it back out in an extremely large, blue blast of power. Essentially, Venom now has an organic energy laser. For some readers, it may bring to mind the atomic breath used by the iconic kaiju Godzilla in the multiple films starring the gargantuan lizard. While the King of the Monsters has used the ability in several incarnations of the character, it was made famous most recently in the 2014 Godzilla film, where the creature uses it to great effect in defeating the two MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism), with his entire spine gradually glowing blue and he charged up, expelling the bright blue blast of nuclear energy right at his foes.

Venom's bio-organic energy blast isn't the only power seen in Venom #27, and there could be more as this current arc set in the future continues. Eddie's symbiote believes that it's due to their proximity to a symbiote hive mind, of which Eddie's symbiote hasn't been near since it was born. With Knull seemingly in charge, it makes sense that a hive mind would be nearby. While it looks as though it's currently allowing the symbiote to learn new powers for Venom to use, there could be a downside. A hive mind is still a hive mind, and it's possible that Eddie's symbiote could get trapped within it if they're not careful. Venom fans will have to wait and see what happens as Marvel's Venom series continues next month.
