[UPDATE: The Venom teaser trailer has arrived!]

-

Sony has released an official poster for the Venom movie starring Tom Hardy, ahead of the first trailer dropping online sometime tomorrow. Written by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Venom will serve as the first installment in a series of Sony-backed comic book movies based around Spider-Man antiheroes like Eddie Brock aka. Venom, along with characters such as Silver Sable and Black Cat.

It's not altogether clear yet how these Sony Spider-Man "spinoffs" will or won't connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given that the web-slinger himself is now an official part of Marvel Studios' film and television universe. Rumor has it that Tom Holland, who made his MCU debut as Peter Parker almost two years ago now in Captain America: Civil War, will make an appearance in the Venom movie, but that hasn't been confirmed yet. Perhaps the film's teaser trailer will shed some light on the matter.

Speaking of which, Sony Pictures has now formally confirmed that the Venom teaser trailer will be arriving tomorrow on Thursday, February 8. The film also has a newly-unveiled logline that avoids revealing any major plot or character details ahead of its trailer launch, simply affirming that "One of Marvel's most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom." You can check out the official Venom movie teaser poster below.

The "lethal protector" term from that logline is a nod to the Venom: Lethal Protector comic book series that is serving as the primary source material for the Venom solo movie. The film will follow Hardy as the investigate journalist Eddie Brock to San Francisco, where he attempts to take up a career as a crime-fighting superhero on the side, much like he did in the Lethal Protector comics. The first Venom image released last month further nods to the Lethal Proctor storyline, showing Brock with a notebook that name-drops the Life Foundation - an evil organization that, in the Lethal Protector comics, attempts and ultimately succeeds at engineering its own symbiotes based on the original Venom symbiote.

It's possible the Venom trailer will finally confirm that Riz Ahmed's mystery villain character in the film is in fact Dr. Carlton Drake, aka. the head of the Life Foundation, as rumored. Seeing as Venom director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) and his production team still have some eight months of post-production left until the movie opens in theaters this fall, the teaser probably won't contain too many shots of Hardy in his proper transformed Venom state. Nevertheless, the trailer should provide at least a fleeting glimpse of a CGI-enhanced Hardy as the big (gooey) guy in action.
