Tom Hardy hopes to explore the Marvel multiverse in future Venom sequels, but acknowledges there still needs to be some set-up with Sony's franchise. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand in new ways, Sony slowly charging forward with its own comic book-inspired world. Venom, which starred Hardy as Eddie Brock, kicked things off in 2018, and last year was supposed to produce two new installments: Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius. The latter has been delayed to 2022, but the Venom sequel is just a week and a half away from release.

So far, Sony can only make Marvel movies centered around the characters it has the rights to, which includes much of Spider-Man's biggest antagonists. Nevertheless, because Sony has partnered with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man to the MCU, many have begun to wonder if the two separate universes could ever collide. The first trailer for Morbius seemed to suggest they will, since Spider-Man: Homecoming's Michael Keaton popped up as Vulture. Aside from that, though, the multiverse remains a strictly MCU concept.

However, Hardy has hopes that could change in the future. Speaking with Screen Rant about Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the actor touched upon the multiverse and admitted he would like to explore it in future movies. Hardy acknowledged the need to further establish the "Venom-verse," but that it's hard not to consider crossing over when playing in a Marvel world. He said:

Yeah, it's really hard because for me and the guys in the Venom-verse, we came together under Sony and that's who we work for, that's who we run with, that's our team, you know? And obviously we just look at it as creatives and say, "Look at all of these things we could play with." But we really have to establish ourselves as somebody that maybe they want to play with. Maybe somebody that belongs in that world first. And do you like what we represent as Venom? Is this established? Once it's established, we then have to continue our Venom-verse. But at the same time, we will always looking to campaign to play with that with all the brothers and sisters who are out there, do you know what I mean? Whether we can connect the dots, that's up to the constellations, and that's above my pay grade, but we would be remiss not to think about that when we're working on the material.

Eddie Brock holds a flashlight in Venom 2

The MCU is going all in on the multiverse for its first post-Infinity Saga era. The first season of Disney+'s Loki introduced the concept and set it loose on the franchise, and the ongoing What If...? has revealed all the possibilities it holds. Under the multiverse, it would be possible to unite the MCU and Sony's Venom universe into one movie. Whether that will actually happen remains to be seen, but Hardy is interested in the prospect. It also helps that Venom 2 director Andy Serkis recently said Eddie Brock and Spider-Man will have to meet sometime in the future.

Right now, further sequels are up in the air. Sony has yet to greenlight Venom 3, but the studio also is quite pleased with Let There Be Carnage. It seems all but certain that Hardy will get to play Eddie once again, and that a future meetup with Spider-Man isn't out of the question. As Hardy pointed out, though, Venom's world needs a bit more development. Perhaps the long-awaited arrival of Morbius can help broaden it... or at least explain just what the Vulture is doing over in Sony's universe.
