A new piece of fan art sees Venom become King Shark in a bizarre, and delicious, The Suicide Squad and Marvel mashup. Best known for breathing life into anthropomorphic comic book characters in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, this year, James Gunn introduced a handful of DC oddballs to The Suicide Squad’s Task Force X. Rick Flag and Harley Quinn were joined by Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, and the humanoid Great White with an affinity for “nom noms,” Nanaue, a.k.a. King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone).

Andy Serkis’ Venom: Let There Be Carnage was also released this year. The film saw the return of Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom (voiced by Hardy) to the big screen three years after their debut in Venom (2018). Following the events of their first outing, the odd couple finds themselves bickering over the direction of their lives just in time for Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) to get a symbiote of his own, Carnage. Outside of Let There Be Carnage’s central relationship and PG-13 “carnage,” one of the film’s most notable moments came via its post-credits scene—which teased the future of Sony and Marvel.

Artist Baki Kaya recently posted some art to Instagram imagining Venom as King Shark in a The Suicide Squad and Marvel mashup. The piece acts as a poster for “Nom Nom: Let There Be Carnage King Shark Edition,” which naturally sees the eponymous symbiotic merge with the shark in question. Check it out below:

Venom is more intelligent than King Shark, but both characters struggle with an insatiable desire for human flesh. While Eddie keeps Venom, King Shark has Ratcatcher 2 and the rest of his friends. Theoretically, a symbiote could fuse with a humanoid shark if the pair were deemed a good match. At the very least, they'd get along. Unfortunately, one character exists in the DCEU while the other is in “Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters.” That being said, Let There Be Carnage’s credits scene saw Eddie Brock and Venom transported to MCU where he watches J. Jonah Jameson reveal Spider-Man's identity on TV. These days, there’s no telling who could show up in any universe.

Marvel and DC characters have crossed over on special occasions in the comics but never on the big screen. Gunn has even spoken with “the powers-that-be” at Marvel and DC about crossover ideas. However, the chances of ever seeing that come to fruition are unlikely. Warner Bros./DC Films and Disney/Marvel Studios and, by extension, Sony, are competitors that anticipate going head-to-head at the box office. Still, Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man partnership does serve as a blueprint for future, limited-run crossovers. With Gunn working with Marvel on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and his Peacemaker series set to expand the “Gunn-Verse” on HBO Max, no one knows what could happen in future projects. Regardless, Venom certainly deserves a sandbox comparable to Gunn’s R-rated The Suicide Squad.
