Warning! Spoilers ahead for Venom #4
In Marvel Comics' latest issue of Venom, a truly gross (yet also endearing) version of The Lion King plays out between Marvel's New King in Black and his son, who's struggling to become a new Lethal Protector. Following Eddie Brock's death, Dylan and his new symbiotic other half have been marked as fugitives, on the run from the reborn Life Foundation who are part of an even bigger conspiracy. However, not even death can stop the King in Black. While Eddie Brock's physical body is no more, Eddie is still alive through the symbiote hive-mind. As such, he appears before his son not unlike King Mufasa appearing before Simba after his death by the wildebeest stampede.
Thanks to Eddie's status as the King in Black and his command over all symbiotes in a vastly connected hive-mind across time and space, he's been attempting to commune with his son by taking control of symbiotes at will. However, this requires Eddie to untether himself from his own linear timeline and thought processes, resulting in an experience he's still trying to get a handle on. Meanwhile, the former Venom's son Dylan Brock is captured by the Life Foundation and held in an Alchemax facility. Both organizations are part of a greater conspiracy known as "The Absent Throne."
The Venom symbiote stages a rescue attempt in the new Venom #4 from Ram V and Bryan Hitch. However, Dylan needs to be convinced to truly bond and engage in a genuine symbiosis with his father's symbiote. To accomplish this, it takes Eddie himself using four symbiotes merged together, creating his likeness in a combined mass puddle. Eddie encourages Dylan to bond with the symbiote as a part of him will always be there for Dylan by assuming the Venom mantle. This moment between the father king and the inheriting son is not unlike Mufasa speaking with Simba to remember his destiny (though with gross symbiote goo being used instead of majestic clouds in the stars).
It's also interesting that Eddie doesn't seem to be aware of the other times he's met with Dylan, such as when he showed up at their house while another version was on the phone at the same time. It's likely that the past times Dylan has seen his father are moments that haven't yet happened for Eddie, creating a non-sequential sequence of Eddie attempting to guide his son that has proven to be quite confusing. This is also supported by Eddie mentioning that the time-traveling despot Kang the Conqueror was wrong, and the King in Black is seemingly very determined to fix things in spite of whatever Kang said, using his own unique ability to travel through time using the symbiote hive-mind.
Regardless, Eddie and Dylan getting their own Lion King moment is fairly significant for the two Brocks (despite the gross methods used). While he might not have his physical father by his side, Dylan still has Eddie with him through the symbiotes, just as Simba still had a connection to Mufasa through the stars and the kings of the past. It's going to be interesting to see where Dylan and Venom go next now that they've truly bonded and become Marvel's next Lethal Protector.
