Dylan Brock is the new Venom, and in a special look at the cover for December’s Venom #3, the new pairing is not going well. Dylan has bonded with the Venom symbiote in the wake of his father’s ascension, but it is clear this pairing will be much different—and the two may end up fighting each other.

The conclusion of the King in Black saw Knull defeated and Eddie Brock ascend to the role. Eddie began charting a newer, more benevolent course for the symbiotes. This required Eddie to largely leave the Earth behind to travel the cosmos; meanwhile, his son Dylan had become close with Eddie’s former Venom symbiote. In the landmark Venom #200, Dylan bonded with the symbiote, becoming the new Venom. This October, Marvel will debut a new Venom title, written by Ram V and Al Ewing, with art by Bryan Hitch. The new title tells two stories: Dylan’s adventures as Venom on Earth, and Eddie’s cosmic odyssey steering the destiny of the symbiotes. While Eddie struggles with being a leader, Dylan is struggling with the symbiote, and in the cover to Venom #3, this struggle comes to a head!

The cover, supplied by Marvel in a press release, shows the Venom symbiote wrestling with Dylan, and it clearly has the upper hand. The press release also revealed plot details: Dylan is not enjoying the same relationship with the symbiote his father enjoyed. Dylan is slowly starting to learn that the Venom symbiote is an alien, that thinks differently than humans. It is bloodthirsty and violent, and Dylan cannot handle this. The relationship between Dylan and his symbiote has broken down completely, and it may spell certain doom for Dylan.

Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman set the bar high for the character during their epic three-year run, a run that culminated in King in Black. They transformed the character forever, and the incoming team of Al Ewing, Ram V, and Bryan Hitch look to keep that momentum going, promising to rock Venom's world to the core. Dylan is a different person than his father and thus he will have a different relationship with the symbiote. In the press release, Ram V has said the story will follow Dylan learning about his father, and the scars his father carries. This adds a layer to both the story and the cover to Venom #3: the story will be about Dylan coming to terms with his father’s legacy. Dylan will wrestle with this legacy as he seeks to forge one of his own.

Dylan will not be the same Venom as his father, and if the cover to Venom #3  is any indication, it looks as if there will be some growing pains for Dylan and his symbiote along the way.
