Eddie Brock Just Lost The Venom Symbiote in Marvel Comics

Eddie Brock may be making his movie debut in Venom, but the comic book version just says goodbye to his symbiote - and possibly for the last time, hard as it may be to believe.

That doesn't mean that the death of the Venom symbiote wasn't offered up as a noble sacrifice, or that Eddie wouldn't have been willing to join it in death if it meant saving the entire world (which it did). But as our preview of Venom #7 reveals, Eddie Brock managed to survive where the symbiote apparently perished. And while that might sound like good news to fans of the brave Brock, the handcuffs locking him in place, and the grinning interrogator now spinning Eddie into confusion are a new kind of problem.

A problem that Eddie will have to solve without Venom's help - and with his mind and emotions now in grave danger, as opposed to his body.

For any fans who may not be up to date on the latest from Donny Cates and Iban Coello in the Venom series, the previous issue made serious history in the larger symbiote mythology. After the creator of the symbiotes, the Elder God named Knull came to destroy Earth, Eddie and his trusted symbiote stood against him. With help from another symbiote - one who fought beside the Venom Wolverine in Vietnam - the heroes locked Knull and his symbiote self into a blast furnace, burning him to ash. Unfortunately, resisting the fire took the lives of both Eddie and the Venom symbiote.

Which is where Venom #7 picks up, revealing Eddie very much alive... but the symbiote no longer with him. Check out the preview pages below:

The biggest questions left dangling by this preview are sure to be the same for most readers. Who is the grinning man interrogating Eddie? What happened to his symbiote after the team showed up to collect samples? And what's so funny about SHIELD no longer operating in Marvel's Universe? Those questions will have to wait for the rest of the pages, if not the coming issues in this "Abyss" storyline. But enough time has obviously passed between Venom's "death" for Eddie to grow both a beard and hair since both were singed off in the fire. But that still leaves the actual facts of the issue in shadow.

That's obviously right where Cates and Coello want fans to be, left as completely clueless as Eddie himself, with no sense of where he is, when he is, or why he's even being held. All fans need to know is that the symbiote is gone, burned up, or otherwise completely removed from Eddie's story. None of those are good options, and the synopses of the next Venom issues promise that Eddie will feel pain the likes of which he hasn't in as long as he can remember. Here's hoping there's a symbiote reunion waiting at the end of it.
