This article contains spoilers for Venom #1.

Marvel Comics has just given Venom his biggest power-up - ever. Venom may be one of Spider-Man's most fearsome frenemies, but few Marvel fans would suggest he numbers among the publisher's most powerful heroes. But Eddie Brock's life changed dramatically in the aftermath of the "King in Black" event, in which Venom became the most powerful hero in Marvel's universe - summoning Silver Surfer's board (which he turned into a sword) and Mjolnir. He then combined the cosmic Enigma Force with these two weapons to defeat Knull, God of the Symbiotes.

Knull's defeat left his throne vacant, and Eddie Brock took it for himself. Now, Eddie is more than a mere man; he is bound to every symbiote in the galaxy, able to transport himself through the symbiote's hive mind, meaning he can project himself across the cosmos in a matter of seconds. Every single symbiote is sworn to serve his every wish, meaning Eddie now commands an entire symbiote army. Venom has become the new God of the Symbiotes - but the true scale of his powers has only just been revealed, in Al Ewing, Ram V and Bryan Hitch's Venom #1.

Venom #1 sees Eddie Brock push his powers in a very different way. Facing a cosmic "King in Black" style threat, he decides to learn about the enemy he is facing... by pushing his mind forward in time. Eddie correctly deduces he can bond with any symbiote at any point in time as well as space, and he hopes to catch a glimpse of his new foe. The process is remarkably easy to initiate, requiring just a moment's thought, but unfortunately, the former Venom learns his mind is ill-equipped to handle the process - at least without any training or practice. "Time is a river and I can't swim," Eddie admits to himself. "I was nearly swept away."

Venom Time Travel

Marvel Comics had already given Eddie Brock an incredible power-up, but Venom #1 takes it to the next level, literally transforming him into a time traveler - one whose power can be triggered with just a single thought. Ironically, the ease is in itself a problem, because Eddie swiftly realizes it's very hard to stop yourself thinking about the possibility of traveling through time when it comes so easily to you. Fortunately, Venom #1 suggests he will soon gain a mentor, a rather more experienced time traveler; his flashes of time and space include a vision of Kang the Conqueror referring to Eddie Brock as his oldest friend.

But Kang does not seem to be Venom's salvation, because his words also include a warning that he is facing an impossible, no-win scenario. It's reasonable to assume Eddie's vision has just set this entire future in motion, meaning his encounter with Kang is preordained - as is the fact the knowledge he gains will not be enough. As powerful as Venom may now be, he is not powerful enough.
