Sony Pictures won't officially confirm or deny rumors Spider-Man (Tom Holland) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will cameo in Venom 2. Though Sony is currently sharing Spider-Man with Marvel Studios, with the character set to star in another solo movie and team-up film in the coming years, the studio isn't letting their other Marvel characters sit on the sidelines. Sony launched a Spidey-adjacent movie series all their own with Ruben Fleischer's Venom in 2018, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. The film is the first in Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC), which will additionally include Jared Leto's Morbius out later this year, and Venom 2.

Though Venom reviews among critics were mixed-to-negative, it found an audience with casual moviegoers, to the tune of $856.1 million at the worldwide box office. As a result, Sony greenlit Venom 2, with Hardy set to return and Andy Serkis to direct, taking the reins from Fleischer. Although Venom 2 doesn't officially have a release date yet, it's widely believed the film will occupy Sony's Oct. 2 spot, and the Marvel sequel is currently in production. Recently, a new Venom 2 rumor stated Holland's Spider-Man will have a cameo on the movie, and now Sony has responded to the report (kind of).

DiscussingFilm editor-in-chief Jacob Fisher tweeted that Sony representatives responded to his request for comment on the story about Spider-Man being in Venom 2 with a simple "No comment." As Fisher notes in a follow-up tweet, a "no comment" response may be indicative of the story being true - though that's not necessarily the case in this instance. See Fisher's tweets below.

According to the original rumor, talks with Holland to cameo in Venom 2 were still in the early days - and it's unlikely much has changed since the rumor was initially reported given the holidays - so it's possible nothing has been set yet. Even if Holland and Sony come to an agreement, it's likely the studio won't announce the cameo, instead keeping it as a fun surprise for moviegoers when they see the film. It's also possible Sony won't officially confirm the cameo before Venom 2 releases because of what reportedly happened with the first film. Per reports that surfaced when Sony and Marvel were renegotiating their deal, Holland filmed a Spider-Man cameo for Venom, but Marvel made Sony cut it. The more recent rumor claimed Spidey cameoing in Venom 2 was part of the studios' new deal, but that's unconfirmed.

Fans who want to see these characters crossover would no doubt be excited for a Spider-Man cameo in Venom 2. Both Hardy's Eddie Brock and Holland's Peter Parker are fan-favorite characters, and they're very different kinds of heroes, so they could have some incredibly fun interactions. Of course, fans may have to wait until Spider-Man officially exits the MCU - which Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is reportedly already planning - before Spidey and Venom officially team up. But Venom 2 featuring a Spider-Man cameo could set the stage for the future of the SUMC in a big way.
