Warning: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home's screenwriters explained the reason Venom knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man. No Way Home, which is the third solo Tom Holland Spider-Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saw one of Doctor Strange's spells go wrong and collapse the multiverse in upon itself, allowing cameos from many previous iterations of Spider-Man. The trailers revealed that Peter would have to face off against Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Thomas Haden Church's Sandman, Rhys Ifans' Lizard, and Jamie Foxx's Electro, but in the third act the film revealed that both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker had also come to the MCU. Finally, in the mid-credits scene, the film closed the loop with the post-credits scene of Venom: Let There be Carnage by showing what Eddie and Venom have been up to before sending them ignominiously back to their universe, leaving just a small blob of symbiote behind.

The inclusion of Venom, even in such a brief moment, caused major confusion among many viewers, considering that the in-universe explanation for the legacy characters appearing in the MCU was that Strange's spell was dragging in any character from any universe who knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Spider-Man is a conspicuous absence from Sony's anti-hero universe, which also includes the upcoming Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. This is even proven when Venom and Eddie turn on the TV in that Venom 2 post-credits scene and are introduced to Peter Parker on the news. Because of this, fans were wondering exactly how Venom could have been dragged in along with the other characters.

When Variety interviewed No Way Home's screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, they asked that same burning question about Venom. Now that they have been unshackled and are able to talk about spoilers, McKenna explained that the information is "buried" in Venom's brain. He continues, saying that "the symbiote has knowledge of other universes." Read the full quote below:

The idea is that the symbiote has knowledge of other universes. Buried in his brain is some knowledge of that connection.

Tom Holland Venom Spider-Man

Venom does not function like any other character in the Spider-Man Universe. As both an alien and a creature that has the ability to blend its cells with that of a host body, it certainly has access to a plane of existence that is lost to other humans and even other aliens. This information may play into future Venom films as well.

Fans of the comics and the MCU respectively will have to decide whether or not the reason for Venom's appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home is entirely credible. However, in terms of a comic book universe - the type of place where such explanations are frequently applied to the reason that characters coming back from the dead - the explanation is perfectly satisfactory. The important thing is that this is something that the screenwriters did consider before including Venom in the film, which is the most important thing for filling in that plot hole.
