Warning! SPOILERS for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The post-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage features a surprise appearance from Tom Holland's Spider-Man, but it probably isn't new footage. For years, there has been speculation over the precise relationship between Sony's Spider-Man spinoff films (now officially called "Sony's Spider-Man Universe") and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's been quite clear Sony hoped to establish a relationship of some sort between them, with Sony's Amy Pascal infamously referring to them as "adjuncts" to the MCU.

The matter has finally been resolved in the post-credits scene for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which set up Venom's introduction to the MCU. It saw Eddie Brock transported across the Multiverse, with a portal effect remarkably similar to those scene in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and he had clearly emerged in the MCU. He appeared in what seemed to be a hotel room, where he watched a news report from the Daily Bugle by J. Jonah Jameson talking about the "Spider-Menace." It featured a new shot of Peter Parker, publicly unmasked as Spider-Man, and the tongue-slavering symbiote immediately set its sights on Spider-Man. Naturally, this is leading to intense speculation Venom will appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as the final member of the Sinister Six. Naturally, there's also discussion about whether or not this new shot of Peter Parker was taken during production of Spider-Man: No Way Home - or whether it's older footage.

This footage does indeed appear to be new. In Spider-Man: Far From Home's post-credits scene, the wall-crawler's secret identity was revealed to the world while he was near Pennsylvania Station in New York (the exterior of the station can actually be seen at one point, when Spider-Man perches and watches Jameson on the screen). Marvel returned to the area around Pennsylvania Station while shooting Spider-Man: No Way Home, presumably to film scenes set immediately after the identity reveal. In fact, shots of Spider-Man stood outside a nearby subway - surrounded by a crowd - appeared in the recently-released Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. The shot of Spider-Man in Venom: Let There Be Carnage is clearly taken from this, because there's a telltale signpost in the background saying "PENN-1."

Spider-Man puts his hands on his head, shocked

The shot of Spider-Man seen in Venom: Let There Be Carnage's post-credits scene has interesting implications for the MCU. If, in narrative terms, this footage was taken immediately after Spider-Man: Far From Home's post-credits, Peter Parker didn't even try to deny claims he is Spider-Man. Instead, he wound up swarmed by a crowd and unmasked, with footage of him unmasked subsequently circulating online. Meanwhile, Spider-Man's Daily Bugle newspaper now runs its own news channel, its fortunes presumably bolstered by obtaining the faked Mysterio videos.

One thing's for sure, though: Venom: Let There Be Carnage's post-credits scene really does seem to suggest Tom Hardy will return as Venom later this year, because he's now occupying the same universe as Tom Holland's Spider-Man. The Venom symbiote seems to quite like the idea of eating Spider-Man's brain. It remains to be seen what will happen next. The trailer for Morbius suggested there's already a Spider-Man in Sony's universe. Alternatively, Holland may end up jumping dimensions after Spider-Man: No Way Home and his final MCU appearance. Only time will tell.
