Venom and Spider-Man In Let There Be Carnage Post Credits Scene

Warning: SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home!

Spider-Man: No Way Home writers confirm that Jon Watts directed Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s post-credits scene. The box office extravaganza that is No Way Home is Disney/Marvel Studios’ first true multiversal adventure, capitalizing on nostalgia by bringing back characters from Sony’s past. Even before Watts’ film hit theaters on December 17th, fans knew its crossover potential was high—something teased at the end of Let There Be Carnage.

In Sony’s follow-up to 2018’s Venom, Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock/Venom and faces off against the serial killer Cletus Kassidy (Woody Harrelson), who becomes the host for the symbiote, Carnage. At the end of Andy Serkis' film, Eddie and Venom decide to go on vacation and, in the post-credits scene, the pair make their MCU debut. While lying in their hotel room, discussing the “years of hive knowledge across universes,” a flash of light triggers a change in the hotel surroundings before Eddie finds himself staring at Spider-Man (Tom Holland) being unmasked by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) on TV. Holland had previously confirmed that this scene was filmed on No Way Home's set and now we know it was directed by Watts.

In a recent interview with VarietyNo Way Home writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna confirmed Watts filmed Let There Be Carnage’s credits scene during the production of his threequel. At one point, the minds behind No Way Home even considered having Hardy’s character appear in No Way Home’s final battle. However, Eddie and Venom’s role in the film is ultimately relegated to yet another credits scene.

Spider-Man No Way Home Venom MCU Exit Explained SR

In No Way Home, Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell accidentally brings villains who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man including Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ifans) into the MCU. Long before Let There Be Carnage’s credits scene, fans theorized that No Way Home would be a Sinister Six movie with Venom being the sixth villain—something exacerbated when Hardy was spotted wearing a hat from the production of the film. Technically, this turned out to be the case thanks to No Way Home’s mid-credits scene—which sees the symbiotic odd couple ask the hotel bartender questions about the MCU before being hilariously transported back to their universe, leaving behind a small piece of symbiote.

As for how Venom knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man (two entities he nor Eddie had ever met), and therefore was pulled into the MCU, McKenna went on to explain “The idea is that the symbiote has knowledge of other universes. Buried in his brain is some knowledge of that connection.” So, somewhere a Venom/other symbiote knows Spider-Man’s secret identity. For example, Venom knows Spider-Man’s identity in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, a film made canon in the multiverse thanks to No Way Home. Word is still out on how Electro knew. Regardless, now we know that Let There Be Carnage’s sequel likely won’t take place in the MCU and, if Spider-Man ever meets Hardy’s character, it presumably won’t be Holland’s variant.
