Dedicated to showing the less honorable side of politics, Veep is filled with characters that fans love to root against. The show was known for its biting and hilarious insults, its ensemble of terrible characters, and its comedic political satire. For seven seasons, fans watched the mostly evil cast of characters lie, cheat, and steal their way to powerful political positions.

The majority of the characters are at best inept, and at worst power-hungry and ruthless. The characters would do just about anything to get to the top, many of them even breaking laws along the way.

Richard - Working For Two Campaigns

Richard rasising his eyebrows in Veep

Richard was loyal, smart, and had a full heart, in stark contrast to the immoral ensemble that was Selina's team. He began as a volunteer on Selina's campaign and eventually worked his way up to President of the United States through a series of accidents and his friendliness towards everyone. Unlike the rest of the cast, Richard rarely did anything wrong and was the most likable character on Veep.

Throughout his time on the series, he always tried his hardest at his job, even if it didn't work always work out well. The worst thing Richard did on the series was work for both Jonah and Selina's Presidential campaigns. While a conflict of interest, it is not illegal or immoral like the flaws of many of the other main characters.

Mike - General Incompetence

Mike blinking in Veep

Mike started out his Veep journey doing communications for Selina while she was Vice President, he eventually became presidential press secretary, BuzzFeed journalist, and broadcast news anchor. Throughout his many roles, he was known for his incompetence as an employee. He even faked owning a dog to get out of doing work.

Mike did not stoop to the illegal and unethical behavior like many of his colleagues. However, he was often incompetent at his role, leading to negative situations for the veep team. He carelessly left important and incriminating documents behind, revealed too much information during hearings, called a constituent a cow, and often misspoke with the press. While he did not do anything specifically terrible like his coworkers, his general incompetence impacted Selina's success.

Ben - Telling Selina To Set Up Gary

Ben frowning in Veep

Ben was a lifelong politician. After President Hughes resigned, he joined Selina's team to help her have a successful presidency. Unlike Dan and Amy, Ben did not have the vicious drive to become powerful. While he wasn't always moral, he stayed largely out of the more problematic schemes from team veep.

After a heart attack, Ben decides to leave Selina's presidential campaign. However, he tells her that she knows what she has to do to succeed as President and put the Meyer fund scandal behind her. This was a way of suggesting setting up Gary, Selina's loyal servant, to take the fall for Selina and Andrew's financial crimes.

Gary - Wearing His Badge While Buying A Pregnancy Test

Gary Walsh with his arms crossed in Veep

Gary was Selina's biggest fan and one of her best employees. He would do nearly anything for her. As her body man, he knew exactly what she needed at every moment, including what snack she was craving. His love for Selina was undying, and even bordered on an unrequited romantic interest. Throughout all seven seasons of the show, Gary was Selina's biggest supporter.

Selina even called Gary the only competent person on her team, and this is largely true. The worst thing he did throughout the series was accidentally wearing his Vice President staff badge to a pharmacy to buy Selina a pregnancy test. This brought on a lot of attention, with press demanding to know if she was pregnant or not. Gary resigned because of the scandal, but Selina wouldn't let him quit.

Catherine - Publicly Ending Multiple Relationships

Catherine Meyer explaining something in Veep

Catherine Meyer was the frequently bullied daughter of Selina. She was often her mother's punching bag and was used by her father for her inheritance. She eventually fell in love with Selina's bodyguard and one of Veep's best supporting characters, Marjorie.

The worst thing Catherine did was end her relationship with Rahim and Jason publicly. After it is revealed that Rahim is Iranian and Selina believes that looks bad politically, Catherine breaks up with him during a television interview. During a deposition it looks bad that Catherine's fiancé Jason is a lobbyist, so Catherine must once again end a relationship publicly. Both of these breakups are forced by Selina, furthering their negative relationship.

Andrew - Embezzled Money

Selina's ex-husband and on and off lover was largely a negative influence on both Selina and Catherine. He scammed many people around him, manipulated his daughter into supporting him financially, and cheated on Selina multiple times. He was hated by nearly every character on the show and was largely known as a terrible person.

Andrew committed many horrible acts, many of which were illegal, but Andrew's worst indiscretion was embezzling money from the Meyer fund in Selina's name. This lead to an investigation and almost ended Selina's presidential aspirations. It even led to Andrew's death after he fled the country to avoid legal repercussions, though it was later revealed that his death was faked.

Jonah - His Presidential Campaign

Jonah talking into a microphone in Veep

Jonah was hated by everyone on Selina's team, and by most women he interacted with on the show. Most of the show's iconic insults were hurled at him. He started as a liaison between Selina and the President, holding a variety of roles in and out of the White House. He eventually became a congressman, ran for President, and became Vice President.

Jonah did a variety of terrible things throughout his time on the show. He frequently sexually harassed the women he worked with, he faked cancer, and even married his step-sister. However, the worst thing he did was run for President. His campaign was based on racism and xenophobia, promising to end math because it was invented by Muslims.

Dan - Killing A Stray Dog

Dan smiling and pointing at someone in Veep

Selina brought Dan onto her Vice Presidential team specifically because of his willingness to do anything, regardless of legality or morality. He was constantly trying to climb the ladder and become more powerful and successful. He spent time as a lobbyist, television personality, and even helped Jonah get elected to congress. He eventually worked for Richard, helping him become Governor of Iowa.

Dan would do just about anything to get ahead and was one of the most immoral characters on the show.  However, the worst thing he did was actually in his youth. He revealed to Selina that as a child, he killed a stray dog after being dared by kids in his neighborhood. Dan did many terrible things, but animal abuse was easily the worst.

Amy - Managing Jonah's Presidential Campaign

Amy looking confused in Veep

Amy, one of Veep's most intelligent characters, began the show as Selina's chief of staff and worked for Selina in many different capacities throughout the series. Known as uptight and shrill, Amy had a deeply competitive nature and desire for power. She had almost no personal life and felt tied to Selina and her success.

Amy did a lot of questionable things while working for Selina. However, her worst mistake on the show was managing Jonah's presidential campaign. Once Jonah's campaign took a turn towards racism, Amy noticed he was gaining popularity and decided to become his campaign manager. She helped him lean into the racism and xenophobia in order to increase her own power and success. However, she eventually saw the error of her ways and begged Selina not to make him Vice President.

Selina: Sending Gary To Prison

Selina Meyer behind her desk in Veep

Selina started out the show as a comedically ineffectual politician. She hated her role as Vice President and desired more power. She ended the show as villainous and cutthroat. She did many terrible things throughout her political career, lying and manipulating her way to the top, while the people around her took the fall for her indiscretions.

She was willing to do anything to become President, even setting up her closest ally and confidant, Gary Walsh, to take the fall for the illegal financial activity from the Meyer Fund. Gary stood by Selina's side throughout everything, and was her only stalwart supporter. Yet, she turned him in for crimes he did not commit, so she could get the power she deeply wanted.
