The post-apocalyptic vampire series Van Helsing has been renewed for a third season, three weeks before its season 2 finale. The Syfy series stars Kelly Overton as Vanessa Van Helsing, a woman with the uncanny ability to change vampires back into humans.

Based on the graphic novel series Helsing and created by Neil LaBute, Van Helsing premiered in September of 2016 with a 13-episode first season. After debuting on Syfy in 2016, the Van Helsing was renewed for a second season that premiered this October. As established in the Van Helsing series premiere, the show follows the journey of Vanessa after she wakes up from a three-year coma. Fans get to see Vanessa and a group of humans struggle to survive in a war against vampires. Since Vanessa's unique powers make her an important tool in the battle between humans and vampires, the character is often exploited by both sides who seek to use her as a weapon.

As reported by Deadline, Syfy has renewed Van Helsing for a 13-episode third season. Series showrunner Neil LaBute says he "couldn't be happier" that the show is getting another season. According to LaBute, there's still plenty of stories left to tell for Vanessa and her fellow survivors:

It’s great to be working with Syfy on this project again, along with Chad and Mike at Nomadic and all the others at Dynamic and Echo Lake as well. The writing team has some amazing adventures planned for our cast and a few new surprises as well—expect blood to be spilled and characters to die screaming while the fate of humanity slips closer and closer to the edge of true chaos and utter darkness.

Fans will be interested to see what direction the writers will take the show next. When Van Helsing began, Vanessa's main goal was to find her missing daughter, Dylan. In season 2, we learned that Dylan was experimented on and turned into a vampire. Vanessa spent several episodes trying to protect her until she finally tried to cure her with a bite. Unfortunately, Vanessa's bite caused Dylan to crumble into dust.

Still reeling from Dylan's death, Vanessa recently encountered Scarlet Harker (Missy Peregrym), who turned out to be Vanessa's sister. The introduction of Scarlet and the Harkers opens more doors for stories going forward, now that Vanessa will have moved on from rescuing her daughter. Thankfully, fans of Van Helsing still have the remainder of season 2 to look forward to, and they're already assured of another season. So, if the season 2 finale ends on a cliffhanger, fans won't have to worry about the show never getting a chance to follow up on it.
