Enzo: Jealousy Over Stefan

If there was one thing the fans couldn't stand about Enzo, it was his unnecessary jealousy of Stefan. Whether it is because of his bond with Damon or because he was highly respected by the group, Enzo took an instant dislike to Stefan.

For many seasons after, Enzo took over Damon's vendetta and made Stefan's life miserable. He even inadvertently made Stefan kill Damon to ruin the brothers' relationship. He killed Stefan's girlfriend because he upset Caroline. Enzo even admitted to Matt that he was doing all of it out of spite. It did get on the fans' nerves after a while.

Alaric: "The Darkness"

Season 3 saw Alaric undergo some major character development - one the fans did not like. Since Alaric had died and been brought back to life several times, Elena and Meredith believed his mind was becoming fractured. As a result, he developed an alter-ego that oversaw Alaric targeting and killing many vampires.

"The Darkness," as Bonnie liked to call it, also saw Alaric try to kill Elena and Meredith in his fugue state. It's a side no one wants to re-emerge anytime soon.

Jeremy: The Vampire Hunter

Similar to Alaric's story in season 3, Jeremy's character underwent a dramatic change as he became a vampire hunter. In season 4, Jeremy and the others discovered that he was a member of "The Five," a brotherhood of supernaturally gifted vampire hunters who were tasked with taking down Silas.

As Jeremy's mark began to grow, so did his hatred for vampires. It got so bad that Jeremy was forced to move out of the Gilbert home after he tried to kill Elena. His hatred towards his friends and family was hard to tolerate.

Tyler: The Arrogant Jock

Before Tyler's relationship with Caroline, not a lot of people could stand him. Why? Because he was a grade-A jerk. When fans first met the werewolf, Tyler was a very arrogant and selfish jock, who could always be seen bullying Jeremy or mistreating Vicki.

While his personality changed after he discovered his supernatural identity, he reverted back into a pompous and hot-headed jerk when he realized he was human again. Many fans will agree Tyler was at his best when he was dating Caroline.

Matt: Anti-Supernatural Stance

As everyone knows, Matt was the only 'normal' person left in Mystic Falls. The guy has to be the bravest person in the world, taking on vampires, witches, and warlocks. No one could blame him for wanting to be rid of the evil-doers. However, what irritated fans the most was the anti-supernatural stance he applied to his friends as well.

If it wasn't for his friends, Matt would have died back in season 2. Yet, he had no qualms trying to kill Stefan, Enzo, or Damon because someone he hardly knew made him question his loyalties. Let's not forget how he played the blame-game and blamed Stefan for Penny's death. It was so two-faced.

Bonnie: Judgmental

There's no doubt that Bonnie was the real MVP of the show, with the writers putting her through the wringer every season. However, if fans had to choose what her worst characteristic was, it would be that she is far too judgmental.

A prime example being in season 2 when she reacted negatively to Caroline's transformation despite being inadvertently responsible for it. Fans were even more furious when she refused to make Caroline a ring or be friends with her because of her vendetta against vampires. Bonnie could be a bit unfair sometimes.

Caroline: Competitiveness With Elena

Caroline Forbes in The Vampire Diaries.

If there was one character who had the best character growth, it was Caroline. While the vampire was seen to be one of the most selfless and compassionate people near the end of the show, Caroline was a completely different person in season 1.

Not only was she shallow and pretentious but Caroline seemed to purposely put herself in competition with Elena. First, for the Salvatore brothers' attention, then for Matt's attention, and then, for the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. For some reason, Caroline was always insecure about Elena.

Stefan: "The Ripper"

There is no question about what was the worst thing about Stefan's personality was. Without a doubt, it had to be his dark side, otherwise known as "The Ripper." Although Stefan was the most moral vampire you would ever meet, he too, was seen to have blood on his hands.

The reason why Stefan sticks to an animal diet was because he couldn't control his bloodlust. He became so monstrous, it was reported that he slaughtered an entire village of immigrants. He even became known as the Ripper of Monterey. If Stefan ever turned his switch off, everyone would need to get out of the way.

Damon: His Selfish Tendencies

Damon Salvatore was a man with many enemies. Whatever town he was in, trouble seemed to follow him everywhere because Damon did what he wanted without caring about the consequences or who could be hurt in the aftermath.

For instance, Damon killed Lexi in order to throw the police off his trail. When he wanted Katherine back, he unleashed hundreds of vampires onto the town. He even admits that he would have let Matt drown to save Elena. His selfish tendencies were something that rubbed some people up the wrong way.

Elena: Becoming A Vampire

Elena in The Vampire Diaries

If there was one aspect to Elena the fans hated, it was when she became a vampire. It's no secret that fans preferred human Elena over the vampire for several reasons. When she was human, fans believed she was a kind and compassionate person. Elena also proved to be a good friend, sacrificing her life several times over to save her friends.

However, when she transitioned into a vampire, Elena appeared to have a personality transplant. She became a lot more selfish, reckless, and self-centered. Elena didn't even realize her best friend was dead because she was too absorbed in her own life. Being a vampire brought out the worst in her.
