The Vampire Diaries aired for eight seasons from 2009 until 2017, and in that span of time, there were a ton of super sad moments. The series follows teenager Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who meets brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) Salvatore. Elena is just trying to get through high school after losing her parents, but she soon is introduced to the supernatural after learning that they're both vampires. She's drawn to both of them, and the series explores many spooky topics, from witches to werewolves.
While many fans would say that most of the show is heartbreaking, it's time to take look at the moments that made us all tear up the most. Here are 10 times that The Vampire Diaries broke our hearts.
10 Jeremy Wants To Be A Vampire In Season 1
At the end of the first season, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) hopes to become a vampire because he learns that Anna (Malese Jow), who he has been in love with, has died. It's totally heartbreaking to see Elena's brother take pills.
Jeremy's self-destructive behavior is even sadder to watch since Elena has been trying to protect her younger brother ever since their mom and dad passed away in a car wreck. Fans know that all she wants is to make sure that he's okay, and it's clear that this moment is going to absolutely devestate her.
9 Alaric Finds Out The Truth About His Wife
When fans meet Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis), they discover that he thinks that his wife, Isobel Flemming (Mia Kirshner), has tragically passed away. That would break our hearts enough... but the reason why he's on this list is for a bigger, sadder reason: it turns out that the truth about his wife is a lot different.
She actually wanted to be a vampire, and what's even crazier is that Damon is the vampire who did that. It's like Alaric is losing her for the second time. Although it was difficult to think that she was gone, he had been dealing with that. But now, he had to handle a whole new level of sadness.
8 Elena Learns The Truth About Her Family
In the first season of The Vampire Diaries, Elena learns that she was adopted. It's always heartbreaking to learn that the people who you thought were your mother and father actually aren't. They could be the kindest, most loving people around, but they didn't tell you the truth, and so it's hard to deal with.
Things get even wilder on the series when fans discover that Alaric's wife Isobel not only turned into a vampire... but she was Elena's mother. It's definitely a double whammy for Elena, and it made us emotional.
7 Alaric Dies
Given the fact that this series is about vampires and the supernatural, it makes sense that there would be a lot of deaths on it. Another heartbreaking moment is when Alaric dies.
Sometimes, it's tough to know if a character is truly dead in a horror or supernatural TV series. In this case, fans know that Alaric did come back to the show. But it's sad to watch him pass away in the final episode of season three. He has been there for Elena and Jeremy, and after everything that they have been through, it was sweet to see them have someone looking out for them. Fans who cried a ton at Alaric's death were definitely pleased to see him in season six. He's a vampire in that season which is interesting to watch.
6 Elena Doesn't Want To Have Such Strong Emotions
It's only logical that when Jeremy dies, Elena has a really strong reaction. In fact, she starts experiencing such strong and overpowering emotions that she just can't handle them. In the fourth season of the series, Damon helps her out and she decides to stop being human for a period of time so she doesn't have to face any of it.
This is an interesting storyline since it brings up the old saying "be careful what you wish for." While no one wants to feel sadness and other intense emotions, it's part of the human experience and you really can't run away from it. The only way to handle something is to get through it.
5 Stefan And Elena Break Up (Many Times)
They say that "breaking up is hard to do" and that's probably even truer when you're a human who is dating a vampire (or the other way around). Another time that this show broke our hearts is when Stefan and Elena break up... many times.
The couple splits up for a few reasons. They spend some time apart in the second season and then they break up later on because she's in love with Damon. Yup, that's pretty awkward. Fans definitely ship these two characters and it's sad to watch them go through so much.
4 Damon Kills Vicki
In the first season, Damon kills Vicki Donovan (Kayla Ewell). It's a big deal for a few different reasons. For one thing, Vicki and Jeremy had been casually seeing one another, so her death was significant. For another, this was the first time that fans realized that Mystic Falls is a supernatural place and that Damon is evil and Stefan is good.
The difference between the two brothers is something that will keep coming up on the series.
3 Stefan's Big Series Finale Moment
It was clear that the series finale would be completely heartwrenching, and The Vampire Diaries did deliver.
Stefan had a really big moment when he decided that he would die. He and Caroline( ) had just gotten married so that made things a lot sadder. Stefan made this choice for two big reasons: to make sure that Mystic Falls would endure and everyone would survive, and to basically give Elena and Damon his blessing. (Lots of tears.)
2 Elena's Season Six Decision
The most heartbreaking moment on The Vampire Diaries was when Elena makes a huge decision in season six. She chooses to essentially trade her life for Bonnie's. She will die so Bonnie can stay alive. The two of them will be forever connected, and Elena is going to sleep.
Could anyone watch this scene and not cry? It doesn't seem like it... especially because this moment leads to another time that broke our hearts.
1 Elena And Bonnie Meet Again
In the series finale, there is a truly heartbreaking moment between Elena and Bonnie, the two former best friends. They have definitely been through a lot together. While at first they have an innocent enough friendship that is typical of two high schoolers, the fact that Elena becomes a vampire (and dates two vampire brothers) and Bonnie is a witch does make things a lot different.
In this episode, Elena and Bonnie meet again, but in a supernatural and beautiful way. Elena talks to Bonnie while she's in a coma and says that she can't actually pass away just yet. Since the two of them are completely connected, this moment has such weight to it. Yup, cue the tears. It would be impossible to have watched all eight seasons of the series and not start crying buckets in this moment.
