Mystic Falls attracts a variety of supernatural forces throughout The Vampire Diaries. Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sunnydale, the town is home to countless vampires, witches, werewolves and other paranormal phenomena. The fatality count is high for a small town and, to survive, there are important measures that need to be taken.

The popular CW show, which is based on L.J Smith's The Vampire Diaries novels, remains a beloved series for many fans who would love to visit this fictional world. In this imaginary scenario, however, there are crucial survival tips that should be taken into account...

Do: Drink Vervain

Vampires flock to Mystic Falls throughout the series, so it is always handy to keep a supply of vervain nearby. Wearing the special plant allows humans to resist mind compulsion, and ingesting it can make their blood toxic to vampires.

Some vampires such as Katherine Pierce and Stefan Salvatore fight their vampiric nature by drinking vervain daily, to prevent being compelled by an Original. For humans and vampires, having a large quantity of vervain can make all the difference when it comes to surviving Mystic Falls.

Don't: Drink At The Mystic Grill

A great tip for surviving the supernatural town of Mystic Falls is to avoid the Mystic Grill. The Grill is a regular haunt for many vampires, werewolves, and witches in the series. Damon Salvatore can usually be found at the bar with his best friend and drinking buddy, Alaric Saltzman, as well as a glass of bourbon.

The Mystic Grill is nearly destroyed in Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries, and, like The Bronze in Buffy, frequently attracts supernatural trouble. It is probably a good idea to eat and drink somewhere else if you want to stay alive in Mystic Falls.

Do: Befriend A Witch

Witches make exceptionally powerful allies and formidable enemies in The Vampire Diaries. Bonnie Bennett discovers her powers early in Season 1 and saves the lives of her friends countless times with her magic. Bonnie is a loyal and strong friend who exemplifies the necessity of befriending witches for survival in Mystic Falls.

Witches are servants of nature and are fated to work against vampires, though many, including Bonnie, break this tradition. It is better to be a witch's friend than their enemy, as Season 3's Big Bad Esther Mikaelson demonstrates.

Don't: Go To Town Events

The Miss Mystic Falls Paegant

Mystic Falls is a small town with lots of regular events going on, but it might be best to sit them out and find other ways to entertain yourself. The Miss Mystic Falls pageant was crashed by vampires in Season 1, with Stefan feeding on one of the contestants. Every Decade Dance has been invaded by supernatural forces and even Father Kieran's funeral in Season 4 came under fire from Connor The Vampire Hunter.

Town events may seem enticing and a great opportunity to mingle with other townspeople. However, for the sake of survival, it's a wise idea to avoid social events.

Do: Avoid Vampires

A great tip for surviving Mystic Falls is to remember that, although witches make great allies, vampires do not. Some of the vampires in town, such as Stefan, Caroline Forbes, and Elena Gilbert, try their best to maintain their humanity. However, they have still killed innocent people during brief no-humanity binges.

Many of the vampires in Mystic Falls are charismatic - especially Damon, Klaus, and Elijah Mikaelson - but don't be fooled by their charm. People die around vampires and, to survive the town, it is best to steer clear.

Don't: Become Friends With Elena Gilbert

Elena Gilbert is the main character of The Vampire Diaries and the supernatural shenanigans of the town tend to revolve around her. Elena falls in love with Stefan in Season 1, which draws his sadistic brother Damon to town. Elena and the Salvatores lure several other supernatural threats to town, including Katherine Pierce and the Original family.

Many of Elena's loved ones perish throughout the series, including her aunt Jenna and her brother Jeremy. Although some of them return from death, it is probably best to stay away from Elena to avoid following in their footsteps.

Do: Start Training With Alaric

It is a good idea to stay in shape and maintain a fighting-fit physique to survive Mystic Falls. Elena trains with Alaric in Season 3 and gradually improves her combat skills. This proves valuable in later episodes and, to stand a chance against the supernatural, it is best to follow Elena's example.

Don't: Talk To Handsome British Strangers

Klaus Mikaelson, the Original hybrid, comes to town in Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries and brings his family with him in Season 3. The Original family waste no time in taking over Mystic Falls, throwing a debonair ball that impresses the town's residents and cements the Originals' influential status.

Klaus, Elijah, Kol, and Rebekah are all charming but don't be fooled by their flattering British accents. Each Original has killed countless people and wouldn't hesitate to hurt an innocent person to protect their family.

Do: Make It A Fleeting Visit

Mystic Falls is a dangerous town that is plagued by supernatural threats throughout The Vampire Diaries. Countless innocent people are killed by vampires and, if you want to survive, it's best to make any visit to town a short one.

The humans of Mystic Falls are briefly protected by the Travellers' anti-magic spell in Season 6. However, things change drastically for them in the following season when they are expelled from town due to the Heretics.

Don't: Provoke A Lockwood

The Lockwoods are one of the Founding Families in The Vampire Diaries, but they also harbor a near-forgotten secret that Tyler discovers in Season 2. The Lockwoods are descended from werewolves and their supernatural genes are triggered when they kill someone, forcing them to turn into wolves every full moon.

Tyler activates his curse in Season 2 thanks to Katherine's manipulation. He exhibits an animalistic temper before his transformation, heralding his werewolf heritage. It is wise to avoid werewolves and other supernatural forces to survive a trip to Mystic Falls.
