After The Vampire Diaries ended, Jeremy Gilbert worked as a teacher at the Salvatore School. Jeremy Gilbert (played by Steven R. McQueen) is Elena Gilbert's younger brother and the biological son of Miranda and Grayson Gilbert. He's one of the few Vampire Diaries characters to appear on The Vampire Diaries' spin-off Legacies along with Matt Donovan, Jo McLaughlin, Alaric Saltzman, Lizzie, and Josette Saltzman, Dorian Williams, and Kai Parker.

Jeremy Gilbert appeared as a main character on six seasons of The Vampire Diaries. After his death in season 1 (Bonnie Bennett resurrected him), Jeremy developed the ability to see supernatural creatures trapped on the Other Side. He dated Elena's best friend, Bonnie, on and off throughout seasons 2 through 6. During season 5, Jeremy became a member of The Brotherhood of Five: a group of vampire hunters created by an ancestor of Qetsiyah. Their mission was to fulfill Qetsiyah's wish to find Silas and force him to take the Cure so that he could be killed and join her for eternity on the Other Side. Jeremy left Mystic Falls during season 6 under the guise of attending art school, but his true intention was to hunt vampires.

Jeremy made a cameo in the season 6 finale after Kai cast a spell that put Elena (played by Nina Dobrev, who left the show after season 6) in a comatose state until Bonnie's death. Jeremy also returned for the series finale, during which Caroline Forbes wrote in her journal that Jeremy was going to work as a teacher at the Salvatore School. At some point, Jeremy left Mystic Falls presumably to continue hunting vampires, but he appeared during Legacies season 1, episode 3, "We're Being Punked, Pedro." Jeremy rescued Landon Kirby and Rafael Waithe from a werewolf hunter. Jeremy revealed that he'd known Alaric since he was a kid and sometimes worked for the Salvatore School headmaster. Legacies doesn't offer any other information about Jeremy or the current status of his relationships with Elena, Damon Salvatore, or Bonnie. He has yet to make another appearance on the show.

Although fans of The Vampire Diaries and its other spin-off, The Originals have been hoping to see the return of other major characters such as Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley), Bonnie (Kat Graham), Caroline Forbes (Candice King), Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt), and Elena, none of the actors have indicated an interest in reprising their roles. Some of these absences are more glaring than others, particularly Klaus and Caroline. Klaus' (who died during The Originals series finale) fate weighs heavily on Hope, who was told by the Necromancer that her father wouldn't find peace until she does. Morgan discussed the possibility of appearing on Legacies with TV Guide. "No, never, never. You're never going to see it. ... I just feel like to come back as a ghost or a flashback or something, for me, that journey, that story has ended." Meanwhile, Caroline has been searching for a way to save her daughters, the remaining members of the Gemini coven, from the merge.

While show creator Julie Plec has failed to lure back Vampire Diaries' and Originals' fan favorites, the series has provided some Easter eggs regarding their whereabouts and what they've been doing since the shows ended. Damon and Elena continue to reside in Mystic Falls, Bonnie is still friends with Caroline and although she hasn't appeared in person, she uses her magic to help out from time to time. Because Jeremy was supposed to be helping the latest generation of supernatural creatures to hone their powers and control their darker impulses, it was important to address why viewers hadn't seen him since The Vampire Diaries finale. He's still looking out for these kids, just not in a full-time capacity. Season 3 of Legacies is set to premiere in 2021.
