The events that take place on Legacies occur in the aftermath of The Vampire Diaries series finale, and although neither Elena Gilbert nor Damon Salvatore has shown up on the spin-off, the show does reference them and their kids. Based in Mystic Falls, several of Legacies' central characters' origins can be traced to The Vampire Diaries, including Salvatore School co-founder and headmaster Alaric Saltzman, his daughters Josie and Lizzie, and school librarian, Dorian. Otherwise, there's been a surprising lack of crossovers from Vampire Diaries' fan favorites with the exceptions of Matt Donovan, Jeremy Gilbert, and Kai Parker. Most conspicuously absent are Caroline Salvatore (née Forbes), Bonnie Bennett, and Damon and Elena.

On the final episode of The Vampire Diaries, the main characters race to defeat Katherine Pierce, who has become the female incarnation of the Devil, as she plots to destroy the town of Mystic Falls and its residents by releasing Hellfire. Bonnie Bennett, along with some help from her ancestors, uses magic to push the Hellfire back through the tunnels that run under the town and back into the Maxwell Bell. A mortal Stefan sacrifices himself to ensure Katherine perishes in the flames.

Before Stefan dies, he injects his brother with the cure. Damon reunites with Elena who Bonnie awakens by breaking the sleeping spell cast on her by Kai. In her final journal entry, Elena claims she and Damon live "a long and happy life together," and the last scene shows a wedding band on her finger as they walk together hand in hand. During The Originals season 5, episode 12 "The Tale of Two Wolves," a window that reads "Elena Salvatore, M.D." confirms Elena follows in her father's footsteps and becomes the town doctor.

Vampire Diaries Elena and Damon

The murky details surrounding the couples' supernatural-free existence come more into focus On Legacies season 1, episode 10 "There's a World Where Your Dreams Come True." Lizzie, who is tired of living in Hope Mikaelson's shadow, enlists the help of Ablah, a jinni who transforms Lizzie's current reality into ones that don't include Hope. Lizzie's first wish that Hope Mikaelson had never come to the school, meaning no generous endowments from Klaus and a run down Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. When Lizzie questions their dire financial circumstances, Josie tells her sister " ... Damon Salvatore has been as generous as he can be, but he and Elena have kids of their own that they need to take care of."

Lizzie's second wish of the Salvatore School not existing at all results in her and Josie attending Mystic Falls High School, along with Damon and Elena's daughter, Stefanie Salvatore. Josie instructs Lizzie to steal their dad's watch which was a gift from Stefanie Salvatore's father. In both alternate dimensions, Damon and Elena have at least one child and are alive and well - if not well off - living in Mystic Falls. But how reliable is this information? It's nice to get even the slightest glimpse into Elena and Damon's life together as a married couple. While their fairytale ending has already been confirmed by Elena, these additional details aren't set in stone. The jinni tells Lizzie "Everything you are experiencing is, in fact, a potential reality that has occurred as a direct result of your wish." Lizzie's wishes change the fates of everyone around her, including Damon and Elena. Hopefully, more reliable information about "Delena" will be revealed in future episodes.
