Joseph Morgan, who plays the character Klaus Mikaelson in the Vampire Diaries universe, has confirmed that he will be appearing in the Legacies series finale. Klaus is an anti-hero and one of the originals, who are the first generation of their bloodlines. Although Morgan played the character in both The Vampire Diaries and its spinoff The Originals, he has not appeared in Legacies, set in a school for the supernaturally gifted attended by his daughter, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell). Legacies, which premiered in 2018, is currently airing its final season 4, after Legacies was cancelled alongside several other CW shows last month.

Over the past few weeks, Morgan has been posting a series of cryptic messages on his social media accounts that seemed to be teasing his big return as Klaus in the Vampire Diaries universe. In late May, the actor posted an attempt to clear things up about his potential Legacies appearance which, if anything, made his posts appear even more cryptic. In fact, Morgan's insistence that people stop searching his tweets for hidden messages about his Vampire Diaries role reprisal seemed to be winking at them to keep theorizing about Klaus' Legacies finale return.

Last night, June 9, Morgan posted a video on Instagram that confirmed what he has been teasing once and for all. Klaus will indeed be returning for the Legacies series finale. While the actor admitted he wasn't sure about the ethics of his announcement, Morgan forged ahead anyway, confirming that he will be playing The Vampire Diaries character once more. However, that appearance will be only for "fleeting moment." Read his full quote below:

"I don’t know if I’ve got permission to do this… I don’t know if I need it, to be honest; regardless, we’re here now. You are going to see Klaus again, in the final ever episode of Legacies. Just for a fleeting moment. That’s it. You heard it here first."

Joseph Morgan as Klaus in The Originals

The exact nature of Klaus' reappearance in the Legacies finale is still unknown, aside from the fact that Morgan won't be getting much screen time. With the Legacies season 4 episode, which is titled "Just Don't Be A Stranger, Okay?," set to air on Thursday, June 16 the details of his return will be made clear soon. However it happens, it is sure to spur a major emotional arc for Hope, as her late father makes his first appearance in her world of Legacies.

Although the character of Klaus Mikaelsen is technically dead, there are many ways he could reappear in Legacies. For one thing, the world of The Vampire Diaries has a tenous relationship to death in the first place, given the supernatural happenings that form the core of the show. As a result, there is always the chance that Klaus could be resurrected in some way, though it's entirely possible that the fleeting moment Morgan has teased is merely a flashback to a time before his ultimate sacrifice in the final episode of The Originals. All will be revealed when Klaus finally returns in the Legacies finale.
