The Vampire Diaries was a hit show and still is now that it's streaming on Netflix. It had the complexity of a love triangle between brothers and an old flame. It had the drama of enemies destroying main characters and those they loved. Not to mention the dynamics of vampires, werewolves and witches. Here's a look at what scenes from the shows best episodes had fans glued to their screens. Obviously, spoilers ahead.

Mikael Fights Klaus (Homecoming, 9.0)

"Homecoming" was episode nine of the ninth season. While the episode gets incredibly high ratings, there are two moments that had fans on edge. One of them was when Mikael (Sebastian Roché) confronts Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Klaus is on edge when Mikael is able to still compel his followers. Fans gasped in shock when Mikael stabs Elena (Nina Dobrev) as Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tries to kill Klaus with the white oak stake. Things turn as Elena was actually Katherine and Klaus takes the opportunity to kill Mikael.

The second moment is more emotional, since it's here where Katherine reveals she didn't kill Klaus to protect Damon. Meanwhile, Stefan (Paul Wesley) refuses to turn on his humanity.

Lexi Sacrifices Herself (Home, 9.0)

"Home" was a gut-wrencher that had fans' hearts in cardiac arrest. Bonnie (Kat Graham) and the rest of the gang have to try and stop the Other Side from falling apart. There is a bigger risk as Bonnie is the anchor and with every person passing through her, she gets closer to death.

One of the best moments occurs when Lexi (Arielle Kebbel) sacrifices herself to save Damon. She explaines that she wouldn't be Stefan's best friend if she didn't ensure Damon's safety. The finale had fans in tears as Damon and Bonnie accepted the fact that they couldn't return, holding hands as the oblivion consumes everything.

Klaus Completes The Ritual (The Sun Also Rises, 9.0)

In this episode, there is one major moment that made everyone's eye open in shock. Klaus wishes to become a hybrid and will do anything to achieve it. He needs a doppelganger, werewolf and a vampire to complete the ritual. The vampire happens to be Elena's aunt. Fans were saddened when she sacrifices herself for Elena and gets killed.

Klaus completes his wish and bites Elena to become a hybrid. This moment was intense and Klaus now becomes the only one of his kind, for now. Even more emotional was when Bonnie arrives to stop him after being presumed dead. Things get dramatic when it's revealed that the Mikaelson family is alive.

Cade Dies (It's Been A Hell Of A Ride, 9.0)

The most action-packed moment from this episode involves Cade (Wolé Parks), Damon and Bonnie. As fans know, Cade is the first psychic and creator of hell. Damon previously sacrificed himself to enter the Other Side to help Bonnie fight Cade.

An emotional moment occurs when Damon tries to sacrifice himself to allow Bonnie to kill Cade. Bonnie, in return, tries to hold Damon to keep him safe. Things only get better when Stefan double plays Cade and kills his human body. There is also an emotional moment when Stefan asks Caroline (Candice King) to marry him.

Ripper Returns (The Reckoning, 9.1)

Stefan in this season has been struggling with himself and who he was. Here, Stefan loses the battle with his good self. It also doesn't help that Klaus is threatening the lives of Elena and his friends. Klaus pushes Stefan to turn denounce his humanity as the guilt of hurting the one he loves is destroying him.

The epic moment occurs when Klaus has had enough and compels Stefan to reject his humanity. Now set free of guilt, Stefan becomes his old narcissistic "Ripper" self and bites Elena.

Damon Makes A Promise (Masquerade, 9.1)

Stefan stops Damon from staking Katherine

"Masquerade" has a few good moments but they aren't as impactful as others. One of them is when Katherine's witch double-crosses her after finding out a Bennett witch is involved. Upon receiving the moonstone, Katherine starts to feel immense pain and is knocked out due to a spell. While Elena officially breaks things off with Stefan, a better moment occurs at the end.

Katherine is imprisoned and yet, Damon still has strong feelings for her. He is hurt over her conniving ways but promises to protect Elena.

Elena Is Katherine (Founder's Day, 9.2)

The Vampire Diaries Katherine John Gilbert

"Founder's Day" takes place at the end of the show's first season, but it had a whooping end that had fans excited for what was to come. It involved Elena finally kissing Damon. Damon's fans believed they could finally see their relationship blossom, but things didn't turn out that way.

Elena is later seen in the kitchen with her uncle John as he recounts falling in love with Isabel, Elena's mother. Things take a turn when Elena is revealed to be Katherine. She cuts off his Gilbert Ring and kills him, setting up the following season.

Damon Confesses To Elena (Graduation, 9.2)

Damon and Elena kiss on The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries' season finales always seem to have the best moments and the highest ratings. In this finale's case, the clan finally get to graduate... kind of. Regardless of all the intense action, there is one moment that really got to fans' hearts. That is when Damon admits his pent up emotions for Elena.

He admits to being selfish and would rather die than be human or die than see Elena get to live on forever. Elena fights back saying she never regretted being with him and ends it with a kiss. The final dramatic moment occurred when Katherine meets Stefan only for him to be Silas, Stefan's doppelganger.

Everything About The Series Finale (I Was Feeling Epic, 9.3)

Taking the number two slot is the show's final episode. "I Was Feeling Epic" had fans sobbing as their favorite characters' stories finally came to an end. In a finale overflowing with greatness, it's hard to pick just a few to be the best. However, the one that wins the day is when Bonnie has to stop the hellfire from destroying the town. She can't do it on her own, so generations of Bennett witches come to her aid. The moment was powerful and touching.

There are also other moments worth mentioning, such as Stefan sacrificing himself. He gives Damon his emotional speech about Damon being a good man who deserves a life. The ending also got to fans, especially when Elena and Damon are shown to live a long life and are reunited with their loved ones. The episode came full circle when Stefan opens the door and Damon says, "Hello, brother."

Elena's Flashback (The Departed, 9.5)

Believe it or not, the finale of season three gets the top spot. There is a specific sequence of moments that reign supreme. For those who may have forgotten, "The Departed" is a flashback to what really happened all those years ago with Elena.

Previously, Elena says goodbye to Damon and wished they would have met first. Here, it's revealed that Elena did in fact meet Damon before Stefan. It's just that he compelled her to forget. The scene shifted to the car crash that killed her parents, only now synced with the current crash where Elena sacrifices herself and tells Stefan to save Matt.
