The Vampire Diaries was an incredibly successful show that aired for 8 seasons, and spawned multiple spin-offs. It was known for its imaginative storytelling and its refreshing take on vampires and other mystical creatures. It also featured young, good looking characters getting involved in extremely complicated relationships with each other, which is always a bonus.

A large portion of the show was dedicated to portraying these relationships, and because there were a lot of break ups, almost all of the main cast dated each other at some point. However, there were a few couples we would have loved to have seen get together, but never did.

Elena And Elijah

Elijah and Elena at the door in The Vampire Diaries.

We're starting off the list with possibly the most controversial entry (although that could change later on). We doubt any fan has shipped these two, but they're so similar to each other, we felt that they at least deserved a mention. Both characters consider themselves to be honorable, and they would do anything to protect their family.

Back in Season 2, when Elena was being hunted down by Klaus to be used in his ritual, she and Elijah struck up a cordial, professional relationship. They respected each other, and understood the other person's motivations. Add in the fact that Elijah used to fancy one of Elena's doppelgängers makes one wonder what these two would have been like together.

Enzo And Caroline

Caroline and Enzo walk in the woods in The Vampire Diaries

Caroline is one of the most popular characters on The Vampire Diaries, thanks to the talented Candice King. While Caroline dated many of the boys on the show, including both Matt and Tyler, the latter part of the series introduced Stefan as her new love interest. Unfortunately in Season 6, Stefan was being a bit of an ass.

Struggling to cope with Damon's death, Stefan left Mystic Falls and so Caroline and Enzo went to bring him back. The conversations between Caroline and Enzo were surprisingly sweet and Enzo even went to berate Stefan for the way he treated his friend. Honestly, a part of us wishes that Cenzo became canon.

Bonnie And Damon

Bonnie and Damon walking next to each other in The Vampire Diaries.

Yet another controversial entry in this list, Bonnie and Damon definitely had a spark going between them. This one was difficult as their friendship was one of the best things to come out of The Vampire Diaries and part of us didn't want to ruin that by having them get together.

Having said that though, by pairing up these two characters who were basically complete polar opposites of each other, the show hit a goldmine. Their friendship was hilarious and adorable in equal measures and it would have been nice to see them try and take the next step. They would have challenged each other, and become better people for it.

Caroline And Tom

There is quite a large part of The Vampire Diaries fandom that believes Elena and Stefan should have gotten back together, which is fair enough considering that a lot of the series was dedicated to making those two work. If that had happened, ,maybe this could have paved the way for Caroline and Tom to forge a relationship.

Tom was Stefan's doppelgänger, and he and Caroline met when she rescued him in Season 5. She saved his life by preventing Enzo from killing him and they sat down and talked about Tom's life. It was clear that Caroline liked him and they would have made a cute couple, if it weren't for Enzo's second, more successful attempt, at ending Tom's life.

Matt And Rebekah

Rebekah and Matt kissing in The Vampire Diaries.

Admittedly, these two had a short thing together during their time on the show but they never really became a proper couple. When Matt first met Rebekah, she was one of the main antagonists of Season 3, along with the rest of the Mikaelson family. Naturally then, they didn't exactly get along at first.

Gradually though, Rebekah became more human, and appeared genuinely sorry whenever she hurt Matt. It took a while, but the two started to gradually like and respect each other and began a sexual relationship in Season 5. They were really sweet together, and it would have been nice to see them admit their feelings and begin a proper relationship.

Any LGBT+ Relationship

Freya and Keelin sit together

Looking solely at The Vampire Diaries here, the show's rampant heterosexuality is more than a little disappointing. The Originals gave viewers adorable LGBT relationships with Josh and Aidan, and Freya and Keelin so why couldn't its parent show do the same? Sure, they had Luke for a while, but he was only a supporting character and was killed off fairly quickly.

None of the main cast in The Vampire Diaries were shown to be gay or bisexual and that in itself just isn't very good. Even the gay supporting characters got a raw deal: Bill Forbes, Caroline's gay dad, chose to die rather than accept that he was a vampire. A very subtle and not at all disturbing allegory, I think not.

Rose And Damon

Damon sits with Rose in The Vampire Diaries.

Rose was a great addition to the cast, and so she shouldn't have been killed off so soon. Originally appearing as a villain, kidnapping Elena and offering her to Elijah in exchange for her and Trevor's freedom, she became a lot more sympathetic as her backstory slowly filled in the missing gaps for the audience.

It turns out she was just a victim of Katherine's machinations, and upon learning that she and Damon shared a special hatred for Katherine, they grew closer. Like Matt and Rebekah, Rose and Damon did actually hook up on screen but their relationship never progressed any further due to Rose's demise.

Katherine And Kai

Katherine Pierce The Vampire Diaries

These two would have been the ultimate power couple, and we mean that literally. It's actually a real shame that they never met on screen because that would have been utterly amazing. The chemistry between the two of them would have been off the charts and they would constantly be trying to work around each other to get what they want.

They also both have a common enemy in the form of Damon and Stefan Salvatore, and their many allies. They probably would have won if they'd only teamed up with each other. Kai is a psychopath and Katherine is incredibly selfish but that's what would have made this relationship so interesting! Definitely deserving of their own spin off.

Stefan And Lexi

Stefan and Lexi in a flashback in The Vampire Diaries.

These two cuties started off on slightly awkward footing; Stefan was being a wee bit of a loose cannon thanks to his Ripper status and had just slaughtered an entire village, while Lexi sort of just admonished him. Little did anyone know (besides the viewers of course) that this would turn into an adorable friendship.

Lexi helped Stefan to control his bloodlust. Admittedly, it took a really long time but Stefan still owed Lexi a massive debt of gratitude. She was just happy to be his friend though and they clearly had so much fun together. It was the first time viewers saw Stefan completely relax and it was adorable. They should have taken it the whole way and just become an item. Honestly...

Caroline And Klaus

Caroline talks to Klaus in The Originals.

Ugh these two were the pinnacle of adorable relationships. And they didn't even officially get together, which, fortunately for us, means that they are viable for this list. When Klaus was first introduced in the series, he was a charming but cold-hearted monster who only cared for himself. When he became a series regular though, something had to change.

He needed to develop slightly, or else he would become a little bit stuck. Thankfully, Klaus miraculously developed a liking for Caroline and constantly tried to win her over. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. They finally hooked up in Season 5 but that was it for their possible relationship.
