For all the action, drama, supernatural entities, and intense storylines that The Vampire Diaries featured, there was one aspect that stood out above them all. The romances. Fans were incredibly passionate about the relationships that their favorite characters had. They spent hours online discussing who they "shipped" together, and it was a driving force of the series.

Some of the show's couples were kind of perfect for each other. Their chemistry was electric, fans gravitated towards them, and they made the show better. But some couples never quite worked and didn't make much sense. We're looking at both sides and picking the 5 perfect couples and the 5 that made no sense.

Made No Sense: Bonnie And Jeremy

Bonnie and Jeremy

This might sound blasphemous to some fans of The Vampire Diaries. Bonnie and Jeremy were one of the couples who lasted the longest on the show. Technically, they only dated for about a year but it lasted a while in terms of episode count. They were also among the most important couples from a plot standpoint.

There were a few too many clichés with this relationship. The best friend of the main character falling for her little brother is a trope we've seen a lot. It didn't help that the actors never had the kind of chemistry together that made other couples work. Both characters were much better off with other love interests.

Perfect Together: Jeremy And Anna

Take what was said about the lack of chemistry between Jeremy and Bonnie and consider the opposite for this couple. Anna and Jeremy were far better together in terms of coming across like they had real feelings for each other. Things started rocky, with Anna entering Jeremy's life under false pretenses.

However, the two got past those issues and it made their bond stronger. Even when Jeremy failed to become a vampire with her blood, they realized they were what the other one needed. It made Anna's death one of the most heartbreaking in series history, which is saying something on The Vampire Diaries.

Made No Sense: Stefan And Valerie

Stefan and Valerie in a garden in The Vampire Diaries

Technically, Valerie was Stefan's first true love. They met way back in 1863 when Lily sent Valerie to check on Stefan. The couple spent a day together and Valerie got pregnant but ultimately lost the baby when Julian harmed her. If that sounds a bit too much like a bad soap opera to you, then you hit the nail on the head.

Not only was this a cheesy story but it never felt like the great love the show wanted it to be. Plus, when Valerie returned to the present, Stefan got back together with her. That felt weak, especially since fans knew Valerie couldn't match Elena or Caroline in Stefan's heart.

Perfect Together: Rebekah And Matt

Rebekah and Matt kissing in The Vampire Diaries.

We aren't saying these two were one of the best couples on The Vampire Diaries. They were only a short-lived fling after all. But they made complete sense. One of Rebekah's most consistent character traits was her desire to be human again. She craved that normal life.

Matt Donovan was the epitome of that on this series. He lasted all eight seasons and remained human the entire time. It makes sense that Rebekah would be attracted to that. Their relationship was also refreshing because it was casual. Not every romance had to be an epic love story.

Made No Sense: Tyler And Vicki

Tyler and Vicki

The series began with these two as an item, yet it never made sense. Tyler was one of the "cool" crowd and a star football player. Usually, those characters end up with popular girls or cheerleaders. That wasn't who Vicki was. It's okay to play against what we're used to but this was way off.

Vicki was a drug user with a rough family history that made Tyler embarrassed to be seen with her. Considering who Tyler was, it would've made more sense to just avoid Vicki altogether as there were probably plenty of other options at the school. It felt like they were only together to give Tyler something to do before his werewolf storyline in season two.

Perfect Together: Elena And Damon

Damon & Elena hold hands and dance in The Vampire Diaries.

The Vampire Diaries pulled off one of the greatest love triangles in television history. To build a show around the romance between Elena and Stefan is one thing. To have that transition over to Elena and Stefan's brother Damon without fans hating anyone involved is a remarkable feat.

Elena was attracted to the dangerous side of Damon, yet always found a way to see the good in him. Damon loved that Elena represented the decent part of himself. The sparks between them were electric, partially because Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder were in a real relationship behind the scenes for a chunk of the show.

Made No Sense: Elijah And Katherine

If we're talking about 1492, when Elijah and Katherine first met, then it made sense. She was a beautiful girl who the young Elijah fell for and rescued from his nefarious brother. But at one point, Elijah and Katherine were seen to be an item in the present and that never sat well with fans.

Elijah was known for being smart, regal, and refined. No matter how hard he loved, he was someone who could see through someone like Katherine. The fact that they got together after Elijah helped pursue her for centuries was odd, especially when Elijah quickly realized that she was just using him.

Perfect Together: Klaus And Caroline

Klaus and Caroline in The Vampire Diaries.

It was the romance that nobody saw coming. Klaus was the biggest bad guy that the show ever put on screen while Caroline was inherently good. On paper, it shouldn't have worked. Yet it worked so well. When The Vampire Diaries began fleshing out Klaus as a character, they did it by showing his affection for Caroline.

No matter how many dastardly things Klaus did to everyone around him, he always showed his soft side for Caroline. Their courtship was ideal because it showed the good part of Klaus that remained a part of him going forward. He was also the dangerous deed Caroline needed in her life. Their chemistry was undeniable and their hookup on the 100th episode was a fan-favorite moment.

Made No Sense: Caroline And Alaric

Alaric and Caroline stand next to each other in The Vampire Diaries.

We love Alaric. The guy has come back from the dead about a thousand times, is a likable character, and a great father figure. His relationships with Jenna and Jo were some of the best things the show has done. But putting him together with Caroline? No thank you.

It's understandable that they would grow close since Caroline magically carried the twins he and Jo were going to have. But the fact that they got engaged just felt way off. He was her high school teacher! Even if they tried to make the family thing work, it should have just been as friends because this never clicked.

Perfect Together: Elena And Stefan

Stefan catches Elena in The Vampire Diaries.

The series spent several seasons giving us the perfect romance. It was the epic love that The Vampire Diaries was built upon. Stefan and Elena were everything you want from a couple. They had dynamite chemistry, their personalities clicked, they were passionate, and they would do anything for one another.

While Elena ended up with Damon, Stefan was pretty much the perfect boyfriend. Despite his ripper status and blood lust, Stefan would break free of those things for Elena. He even fought off Klaus' compulsion to protect her. The three or so seasons that we got with these two were the best in show history and they were a major reason why.
