The CW's The Vampire Diaries became immensely popular, and it can thank its rich parade of characters, both heroes and villains, for its success. Some of them were more sympathetic, others less, but they all made the show fun to watch. Over its course, many vampires, werewolves, witches, and, of course, humans showed what they can do and how far they are willing to go. Considering how much the audience knows about the show's heroes, it's easy to determine what their defining characteristics are.
The Vampire Diaries is now long finished, though it does live on in a sense in its spinoff series. But if fans want to out which character they are based on their zodiac sign, they can take a look at the characters and their likely signs.

The likely matches are based on the personality traits the characters exhibit, just what motivates them, and how they approach the relationships in their lives.
Aries: Elijah
Elijah was one of the noblest characters among vampires and his character traits make him a possible Aries. People born under this sign are known for being compassionate, determined, and driven. No matter how many times Klaus hurt him, Elijah was determined to stay at his brother's side. He also showed compassion for people, creating a clear contrast with his more ruthless siblings. He even asked Klaus to spare Katherine's life, even though he knew he wouldn't succeed.
Taurus: Klaus
Introduced after the events of the first season, Klaus became an immensely popular character. Klaus has done both heinous deeds and good ones throughout his journey but he can be best characterized by one word: persistent, which would make him a clear Taurus. The defining trait of this sign is its resilience and persistence. Klaus has lived for over a thousand years and he's able to pursue his goals until he reaches them, no matter how long it takes. People born in this sign also like to hold grudges sometimes, and no other character in the show is as good at holding grudges as Klaus is.
Gemini: Damon
Damon is a Gemini and he really fits his Zodiac sign to the letter. Geminis are charming, clever, and outgoing. Damon enjoys the attention of other people (especially beautiful women), he's able to charm almost everyone, and his cleverness shows multiple times when he plots against his enemies. He even killed Lexi to prove that he wasn't a vampire. Finally, Geminis often have a sense of humor, and Damon is known for his witty remarks.
Cancer: Elena
Elena is a Cancer. People born in this sign are often loyal, protective, and clever. Elena is fiercely loyal to her friends and family and she would die for them, in fact, she did die for them in the show.
She tends to protect those close to her, no matter if she might get hurt in the process. She's also clever when it comes to finding solutions to unexpected problems, such as when she tricked Damon and Stefan when they tried to torture her.
Leo: Vicki
Vicki was born under the sign of Leo. She was a somewhat conflicted character but always tried to stand up for herself. Leos are confident in what they're doing or at least seem that way most of the time, a trait Vicki adopted for herself even when she was confused or hurt. They can often be a bit hot-headed, which can lead to making bad decisions, such as when Vicki decided to attack Elena and was killed in the fight.
Virgo: Tyler
Tyler wasn't as popular among fans as other heroes, but that doesn't mean he was a bad guy. Tyler best fits the traits of a Virgo. People with this sign have a dominant personality, are perfectionists, are sometimes a bit arrogant, and are independent. Tyler wanted to be the best at everything, he was outgoing and confident, and he also didn't want to serve others. That's why he took it so badly when Klaus changed him into a hybrid.
Libra: Caroline
Caroline is a Libra. Libras are known for being charming, strong-willed, and well-balanced. Caroline was a bit of mess as a human but once she became a vampire, she also turned more balanced and decided to make her life count for something. She's very charming and active in her community, has the ability to make friends quite easily and when she wants something, she doesn't give up, showing her strong will.
Scorpio: Stefan
Stefan's character traits make him a Scorpio. Scorpios are highly motivated to achieve their goals, and once Stefan sets his mind to something, he won't budge until he succeeds. Like when he decided to bring Klaus down, no matter what, and even went as far as to kidnap Elena.
Because of their persistence, Scorpios can sometimes seem hot-headed, and Stefan does struggle with controlling his behavior from time to time, especially when he turns his emotion off and turns into an evil version of himself, the Ripper.
Ophiucus: Jeremy
Ophiucus might not be recognized as an official zodiac sign, but in some circles, the constellation that appears between Scorpio and Sagittarius still belongs amongst the zodiac. Ophiucus, known as the snake barer, is seen as cunning. While they can be emotional and curious, they tend to play their cards close to the vest. Jeremy grows a lot over the course of the series, changing from the little brother who uses substances to numb his pain into an accomplished vampire hunter. He certainly has the sense of humor and thirst for knowledge associated with the sign as well.
Sagittarius: Jenna
Jenna didn't remain in the show that long but she fits right in as a Sagittarius. People born under this sign are heroic, noble, kind, and selfless, but can also be stubborn. Jenna demonstrated all of the above-mentioned traits when she took on the challenge of raising two teenagers after Elena's and Jeremy's parents died. She was always there for them when they needed her but also was stubborn enough to call Jeremy out on his bad behavior.
Capricorn: Liz
Liz certainly fits in with Capricorns considering her journey in the show. Capricorns are often hard-working individuals, driven and determined to reach their goals. They can be sometimes so focused on their job that it's hard to connect with them. Liz was very passionate about her job as a policewoman, so much she didn't spend much time with Caroline, but she still had a warm heart, like Capricorns also do.
Aquarius: Bonnie
Mystic Falls' resident witch Bonnie is an Aquarius. She likes to keep to herself, and she's not as outspoken as her friends like Caroline, since people born in this sign value their privacy. However, they're also known for their kindness, a trait Bonnie demonstrated multiple times when she helped her friends and people in need. People born in this sign usually don't have too many friends and their trust is hard to gain, but they're very loyal to the friends they have, as Bonnie is.
Pisces: Matt
Matt is a Pisces and he behaved in a way typical for his sign many times. Pisces are known for sometimes caring too much about people. Matt showed the caring side of his multiple times, not just when he tried to take care of his sister Vicki but also by helping Elena to get through her first days as a vampire. People born under this sign are empathetic, feel strongly for others, are amiable and loved by many, just like Matt, who has many friends and not so many enemies.
