Warning: The following contains spoilers for Vampire Academy on Peacock.Vampire Academy began as a series of novels by Richelle Mead before being developed as a movie starring Zoey Deutch and Lucy Fry. While the movie didn’t land particularly well with audiences, fans of vampires get another shot at the series adaptation thanks to streaming service Peacock. Peacock’s new Vampire Academy series is able to go into more detail than the movie ever could, introducing fans to a larger cast of characters with more depth, giving the audience a real chance to get to know them.
Although it's been on for one season, fans already have their favorites. Each of the characters introduced is fully fleshed out with layered personalities. Those personalities can be even further explored when fans think of them in terms of the western zodiac signs.
Aries: Rose
The first personality trait most zodiac enthusiasts think of when they think of Aries is impulsivity. That’s because this is the sign most likely to jump into action without thinking. That’s very true in terms of Rose, whose ready to jump to Lissa’s defense, no matter how dangerous the situation might be.
Aries', however, is also characterized by their passionate nature. Rose is passionate about everything she does, and she feels everything deeply. This might be resentment for the way her mother has treated her, the affection in her friendship with Lissa, or a sense of responsibility to her friends as a guardian.
Taurus: Dimitri
Dimitri seems like a very stiff guardian, stuck to the rules and unwilling to change his mind. That stubborn streak is very much a Taurus trait. Dimitri isn’t entirely unbending though. He’s just learned to depend on a structured set of rules to do his job effectively.
Dimitri is someone who, as a result, is prepared for nearly everything that comes his way. He’s one of the most dependable guardians, always ready with a plan or an answer, and sticking to a training routine that’s proven to work. Dependability and resistance to change is all part of a Taurus' behavior.
Gemini: The Queen
The Queen is actually a very difficult character for the audience to get a read on. She’s been in power a very long time, and her private persona doesn’t seem drastically different from her public persona. However, she does know how to present the part of herself she wants people to see (which is a necessity when she’s been a public figure for so long).
Geminis are known for their charm, for fitting into new situations, and getting others to like them. That's part of what makes Geminis such excellent fictional antagonists, though the Queen doesn't appear to be an antagonist for the main heroes here at all. The Queen is certainly beloved by her people, even by those who want to see the political landscape of the vampire world change. She’s also willing to be flexible, taking Lissa’s proclamations to journalists in stride, and adjusting what she does without completely giving up her power, (like allowing non-Moroi into a celebration, but not allowing them into certain areas).
Cancer: Mason
One of the signs with the reputation for being the most emotional, Cancers are very empathetic individuals. They connect with people quickly, but don’t always want to show their feelings to others right away. Mason, struggling to keep his real feelings for Rose in, is certainly that. Cancers also get hurt very easily though, as Mason also shows when he realizes there are feelings between Rose and Dimitri that go beyond the trainee-trainer relationship.
Of course, this is also a zodiac sign that just wants to help. That’s clear in Mason always ready to be the guardian up for the next mission or training exercise.
Leo: Adrian
Though Adrian only appears in a handful of season 1 episodes, he makes a big impression on Lissa. The wealthy member of vampire royalty has an interest in art and lost stories about vampire history that pique her interest.
Adrian, true to his Leo nature, however, is also something of a party boy. He loves to be the center of attention, and he isn’t ashamed of trying to have a good time while tracking down the answers he wants. Others might see his partying as shallow, but Lissa sees through it to understand that it makes him feel better about not having answers in his own life.
Virgo: Christian
Composed, careful, and ready to take care of others around him, Christian embodies a lot of the Virgo traits. Virgos are known for being the planners of the zodiac.
Christian is the one who first sets Lissa on a path to answers about her elemental abilities. He’s the one ready to train both Lissa and Mia in using their abilities more effectively. Christian also isn’t ready to give up on people that he cares about, like his parents, if he thinks he can form a plan to help them.
Libra: Meredith
Meredith takes her duties as a guardian in training very seriously. She’s more than willing to put her life on the line for others. Her commitment isn’t just to the moroi though, but also to her fellow guardians.
Meredith’s strong sense of justice, as well as her clear understanding of how to bend the rules without breaking them, makes her a good candidate for Libra. Libras can be as charming as Geminis when they want to be, and they can also be strong leaders, like Leos, if they choose as well. Meredith has all of those traits when she chooses to use them.
Scorpio: Victor
Scorpios can be very secretive in nature, only letting those in once they trust them implicitly. Outside his family and small circle of allies, Victor doesn’t trust anyone much. However, that doesn’t stop him from going after what he wants - or thinks he needs.
While Victor is busy keeping his daughter’s “darkness” and his own illness a secret, he’s also busy campaigning for the vampire community to have a strong leader. Although he initially puts all of his efforts into preparing Lissa for the role, he ends up taking it on himself, negotiating with other royal families, and trying to get exactly what he wants for the vampire community.
Sagittarius: Jesse
Jesse might not seem like the most likable member of royalty, but that’s largely because he’s unhappy and feels boxed in by the life he’s leading. He’s trying to find every way he can to get out from under his father’s thumb, and his efforts typically only lead to his father holding on tighter.
Sagittarius is a sign that’s all about freedom and figuring out what the next best thing is. There’s a strong sense of wanderlust in the sign, just as Jesse longs to explore life outside the province in which he resides.
Capricorn: Mia
Capricorns are known for being goal-oriented. It’s one of the reasons so many Capricorns make for great dramatic protagonists: the audience gets to watch them work through those goals step by step. Like many other iconic characters, Mia is a nearly textbook Capricorn.
She has very clear wants in life, and those largely revolve around making a better place for herself in society through a royal family. Mia also has the Capricorn loyalty. She might snap at her sister once in a while, but she truly wants the best for her family and worries about Sonya’s happiness. Mia might come off as cold to those who don’t know her, but that’s because she’s become used to protecting herself from others with her sharp words.
Aquarius: Lissa
Like several other iconic characters, Lissa is an Aquarius. Lissa, despite being born into a royal family, never thought she would be anywhere near a position to rule. As a result, she set out a life for herself that revolved around travel and art, creating her own path for herself and her best friend that is very different from the one planned out for her.
Even after discovering that her elemental magic comes from the secret spirit instead of one of the celebrated four elements, Lissa continues down her own path, ignoring the warnings of those around her. That need to find her own way and not conform is very much in the independent Aquarius nature.
Pisces: Sonya
Pisces is often seen as the most spiritual and the most creative of zodiac signs. This is the sign that loves to daydream, but also the sign that can connect most deeply with others.
Sonya is someone who often finds herself isolated from others because of the “darkness” in herself, but she’s incredibly empathetic, wanting to do the right thing and to help those around her. She dreams of having a happy ending for herself, but if she can’t have it, she’s willing to help someone else get theirs.
