Amidst the plains of Valheim, lox have always been an interesting species. However, the taming process can be long, and until now, there weren't many rewards for putting that time in. Thankfully, with the new Valheim update, Hearth & Home, players who invest in their lox companions can finally ride them, given they have the resources to craft a lox saddle. Although the process is just as long, lox are a fun companion to help players traverse the plains of Valheim.

An important first step to taming a lox in Valheim is creating a base in the plains. Lox, and many of the ingredients required to ride them, are only accessible in that biome. Players may need to forage and search through villages for mass amounts of cloudberries, barley, and flax, to make sure they have enough food to tame the beast. Flax specifically will also help when crafting the saddle.

Once ready, players should create an enclosure out of stone or earth walls (lox can easily break others), with a one-wall space wide gap. Then, lure a lox into the enclosure with arrows or cloudberries, and build a final wall to trap it inside. Make sure to walk away, so it has a chance to calm down. As soon as the lox is trapped and calm, taming becomes fairly simple. Build a staircase alongside the wall to safely throw the foraged cloudberries, barley, or flax inside. Hovering a cursor over the lox will give a percentage, showing how close it is to being fully tamed, so players can easily see its progress. Once the lox is fully tamed, players can craft the new lox saddle.

How To Build A Lox Saddle In Valheim

Valheim Hearth Hom Lox Animal in Field

To craft a lox saddle in Valheim, and prepare to mount their new friend, players need to bring a few things to their workbench. The first ingredient, 10 leather scraps, can easily be farmed by killing boars. Players also need 20 linen thread, which is made from flax. Once players have enough, flax can be transformed into linen thread at a spinning wheel. Finally, to craft 15 black metal, players must have a blast furnace, which is only unlocked after killing Moder. The material can be crafted from black metal scrap, dropped by fulings, and found in plains chests.

When the lox is tamed and the saddle has been completed, players can add it to a hotkey, and approach their lox. Then, there will be a simple prompt to saddle and ride the lox. It's important to note that the new Valheim companion does have its limitations. Players cannot attack while riding their lox, and their lox cannot attack while a player is riding it. However, lox are a wonder to pilot, and the added experience brings a new reward for players who can tame the beast.
