By default, players of Valheim can tame a wide variety of creatures, and a new mod from Nexus Mods user "buzz" has provided players with the ability to tame and breed even more creatures! This mod also contains configurations for the tame rate, taming food quantity, taming food range, and much more. By default, only the Troll and the Goblin Brute will be tameable, but this can easily be adjusted in the mod's configuration file.

The only thing players need is the BepInExPack Valheim pack. Once installed,  download the Alltameable mod from Nexus Mods. Vortex mod Manager will automatically install the mod if used. If players want to install the mod manually, they will need to extract the .dll from the .zip file they downloaded and copy it to steamapps\common\Valheim\BepInEx. The game needs to be run once with the mod to generate the configuration file for the mod. Players will need to modify the .cfg file to make more creatures tameable but don't worry; it's easy!

How to use the Alltameable mod in Valheim

If players are happy with only taming Trolls and Goblin Brutes, they can start taming away! But if players want to tame things like a Greydwarf or a Drake, they will need to get under the hood and modify the configuration file. The configuration file will be found in \steamapps\common\Valheim\BepInEx\config\buzz.valheim.AllTameable.cfg by default.

Once located, create a copy of the original .cfg in case anything goes wrong. Open the .cfg with text editing software. There will be a series of items and values that the player will need to set per creature they want to tame. For example, if the player wants to be able to tame a Neck, they will need to add a line along the lines of "GoblinBrute,true,1800,600,2,10,10,20,CookedLoxMeat:Bread,false,false,3,0.99,10,60;Neck,true,1800,600,2,10,15,20,FishCooked:FishRaw,true,true,5,0.66,12,60" (without quotes) starting immediately after the previous value listed. Mod author buzz provides this breakdown for the values here:

  •  ; This is put in between each tamable Creature
  • : This is used in between each food ID you add
  • , This is used to separate each of the following parts
  • Neck This is the ID of the creature you are adding (all Creature ID's are listed further down)
  • true (The first true I added) This sets the ability to order them to follow you or not (can be set to either true or false)
  • 1800 This is the time it will take to tame them (in seconds)
  • 600 This is the duration of taming each food will provide (in seconds)
  • This is the max range the creature can be at to eat the food
  • 10 This is how often the creature checks to see if food is in range and decides whether it needs it (in seconds)
  • 15 This is how much health the food provides
  • 20 This is the range the creature can detect food from
  • FishCooked and FishRaw These are the ID's of the Items the creature can eat (it doesn't need to be a food item)
  • true (The second true I added) This is whether the creature will change faction when tamed (If set to true, it will attack/get attacked by its own kind)
  • true (The third true I added) This is whether the creature can produce offspring
  • 5 This is the max amount of creatures within 30m you can have; if it exceeds this, they will stop breeding
  • 0.66 This is the chance it has of becoming pregnant. Lower number = higher chance (scales from 0.00 to 1.00)
  • 12 This is how long the creature is pregnant for (In seconds)
  • 60 This is how long it takes for offspring to grow into an adult (In seconds)

Players should note a couple of things while writing the values out. First, all text should start immediately after the "Settings = ". Second, every tameable animal added needs to be separated with a ";" and all values after need to be separated with a ",".  In buzz's most recent post on the Nexus Mods Alltameable page, they included a full configuration text that will add all tamable animals to the .cfg file. Be sure to exclude the semicolon after the last value in the config file. All the taming values can be modified to the player's content, and players can also set the bosses as tamable, but be warned, they will be incredibly aggressive still. Good luck, and happy taming!
