There are many weapons to choose from in Valheim, and each offers a different set of benefits depending on the type. Maces, swords, daggers, and spears can all be useful in different situations, including tasks outside of comabt. However, picking between a spear or a sword in Valheim can be difficult. The sword may seem like the obvious choice, with its long blade and better durability in earlier crafting options. However, Valheim's spears have surprising benefits that might make them a superior option.

There are eight different spears and four different swords currently craftable in Valheim. Players will likely have access to the Flint Spear before they can make the Bronze Sword, as it doesn't require a Forge to craft. Swords do slashing damage, have a Knockback of 40, and a Parry Force of 20. Spears do piercing damage and have a Knockback of 20. Both impact movement by -5%, have a Block Power of 10, and a Parry Bonus of x2. The biggest difference between the two weapons when looking at the numbers is the Parry Force unique to the sword, which can knock an opponent away.

When using Valheim's swords, secondary attacks can stun the enemy. However, Valheim's spears can be thrown, which is useful not just in combat, but also for hunting. Both types of weapons have powerful, high-level options like the Blackmetal Sword and Fang Spear. The Blackmetal Sword can be crafted at Level 4 and deals a massive 95 points of slashing damage. However, the Fang Spear can be crafted at level 3 and does 70 points of piercing damage.

Valheim Spears Have More Benefits Than Swords

Spears are definitely worth the investment when it comes to weapon choice in Valheim. Most options are fairly easy to craft, are effective in battle, and can work for hunting. They also have a specific ability that is better than swords: they are ranged. In close combat, a player doesn't need to get as close to land a jabbing hit, and they can be thrown at opponents from a distance to avoid close combat completely if the enemy is weak enough or the spear is a high enough level. While Valheim's Fang Spear is considered the strongest for damage, the Abyssal Harpoon is a particular favorite for its ability to stick in an enemy, slowing them down. It can also be used to move animals and drag sea serpents from the water.

While spears may have a wider range of uses compared to the swords in Valheim, weapon preference often comes down to each individual player's fighting style preferences. While some Valheim fans may enjoy ranged attacks and weapons that double as hunting gear, others may prefer the style and heavy blows of a sword. Either weapon type has a range of benefits, and Valheim players will want to try both to see which weapon is the best fit for their personal style.
