One of the most important resources to find in Valheim is Black Metal, which can be smelted into some of the strongest weapons and armor you can have in your arsenal. The Norse-themed open world has many materials you're able to harvest throughout your travels. However, Black Metal remains perhaps the most important, since it can be used to craft both offensive and defensive tools.

Smelting down Black Metal produces Black Metal Bars, which are the primary item used to create many different weapons. Those who make Black Metal in Valheim could create tools such as a Black Metal Axe, Sword, Shield, and much more. The larger threats of dangerous biomes may be impossible to take down unless you have strong weapons made from this material.

Where to Find Black Metal Scrap In Valheim

Valheim Player attacking a powerful Fuling Berserker enemy to Farm Black Metal Scrap

According to GameSkinny, Black Metal Scrap can be obtained by defeating Fuling enemies. There are three types of Fulings in Valheim; the normal kind, Berserkers, and Fuling Shamans. Scrap is dropped from these creatures when you defeat them out in the world, but these foes are incredibly powerful compared to the other monsters and animals you might come across in your travels.

Iron Armor or other powerful defensive items are best used to fight Fuling enemies, but those who want to farm Black Metal Scrap may want to take down these creatures with a team.

How to Build a Blast Furnace in Valheim

A work area in Valheim featuring a Black Forge.

Whether you take down a Fuling individually or in large numbers, all the Black Metal Scrap they crop can only be smelted within a Blast Furnace. This device is made when you put together 20 pieces of Fine Wood, 10 Iron, 20 Stones, and 5 Surtling Cores in Valheim. While Fine Wood is easily found in most birch, oak, and stronger trees in the world, the other materials can be harder to find.

Stones are found pretty much in every biome you visit in Valheim, either in spots directly on the surface you can mine or within caves underground. Iron is only found when you open chests in the Swamp biome, and Surtling Cores are dropped by Surtling enemies. Similar to Fulings, you should learn the weaknesses of Surtling foes to farm plenty of Cores from their corpses.

According to a video by YouTube creator Timo, a Blast Furnace must be built within the distance defined by the location of the Artisan Table. Blast Furnaces use Coal as fuel to turn Black Metal Scrap into Black Metal Bars in Valheim. It takes around two pieces of Coal to burn before one Bar gets made, so calculate how much you'll need to convert all the Scraps you've gathered.

A Blast Furnace can hold up to 20 total pieces of Coal and 10 Black Metal Scraps at a time.

Once you find and smelt Black Metal Scrap into Black Metal Bars in Valheim, you can gather additional resources needed to craft some of the best gear in the game.
